The FA falls before the draft so things will most definitely change as far as draft needs go after teams sign their top FAs.

I completely agree about the depth of this year's DL draft. There will likely be at least 10-15 DL (that includes Edge) drafted in the 1st round of this draft.

Yea I figured, he's a great player and they'd just create a bigger hole by letting him go. Would simply be foolish if they do.

I know you said you'd hate if they overpaid for ZaDarius Smith, but would you be open to bringing him back? Or do you think he's just another guy in the system?

ZaDarius Smith would go quiet for stretches and then generate sacks in bunches when it didn't matter. He doesn't really get "quick pressure" either, more like hustle sacks or missed blocks because Martindale is good at scheming pressure.

But I don't want to sound like I think he's terrible. He's an average pass-rusher with some decent skills, and he's versatile and durable. I just would rather let him hit FA and get a comp. pick than give him a big contract. We have replacement-level players behind him who can't even get enough playing time, most notably Tim Williams who has looked like our best pure pass-rusher. I'd rather early extend Judon with that money.

I was just curious because it seems like you guys always have some guy like Smith etc. A fringe type player who you can't decide if he's that good, or if he's just a piece of the system, but they put up decent numbers.

You brought up Tim Williams who I completely forgot about. Lots of upside but completely raw as they come. Has he gotten much playing time? Is Suggs coming back for another year?

Tim Williams looked good, but then he suffered some leg injury and didn't get much time afterwards. But he was easily our best pass-rusher when healthy. Might fill a DPR role next year.

I wish I knew about Suggs. Says he wants to play another year, but who knows what the coaches and FO want. DeCosta is GM now that Ozzie retired. Hard to know how much he values a veteran like Suggs. I mean we saw Reed go to the Texans/Jets for his final year, so it could be like that again.

So... they might go for youth and re-sign ZaDarius Smith and let Suggs go. I'd rather have 1-2 more years of Suggs though. If both Suggs and ZaDarius go, we're left with just Judon, Tim Williams, and Tyus Bowser, which would be pretty thin. And Tyus Bowser might be a bust—that was a risky pick I always thought.
