Hope he returns to pre-injury form.... his breakout season was amazing. The ball seems to gravitate to him.

Five Things We Learned From Jerry Reese

Quote
"1. The draft stands alone. The Giants have been one of the most active teams in free agency this season, filling holes and shoring up positions with more than a dozen additions to the roster. Some may think that would affect Jerry Reese’s draft plans, but the general manager reiterated they are separate entities. “It really doesn’t have a lot of effect on it,” Reese said. “The draft is what it is, it stands alone. We try to take the best players we can in the draft and really, in free agency you try to fill some holes, but in the draft you just try to pick the best players. That’s what we try to do.”

    2. Nassib will get a lot of work this spring and compete for the No. 2 spot. While Eli Manning recovers from an ankle procedure and eyes a training camp return, that opens up the competition behind him, including second-year quarterback Ryan Nassib. “We like Nassib,” Reese said. “He hasn’t really had a chance to do a lot for us, so we’re going to take a real good look at him in the spring. But we think he’s still a good player. He hasn’t had a chance to really play yet, so he’s going to get a lot of work this spring and obviously he’ll get a lot of work in the preseason, along with Curtis Painter, there’s competition, and Josh Freeman.”

    3. Giants picked up fifth-year option on Amukamara. The Giants have exercised their fifth-year option on the contract of cornerback Prince Amukamara, who started all 16 games last season. Reese was asked why and had a simple answer in regards to the fourth-year pro: “We think he’s a good player so we exercised the option.”

    4. Charles Brown is “probably” the backup left tackle. Reese was asked about who is currently No. 2 behind Will Beatty, who is working back from a fractured leg that he sustained in the 2013 season finale. “We brought some offensive linemen in,” Reese said. “The kid from New Orleans [Charles Brown] that we brought in, he played a lot of football there. Right now he’s probably the next option there behind Will. You could even move [Justin] Pugh over there if you wanted to. [James] Brewer is a kid that has talent to play out there if we had to play him out there.” Last month we broke down which positions the Giants’ current offensive linemen have played in the past, and Brown has 14 starts at left tackle, the most behind Beatty’s 42.

    5. Reese is more open to taking risks in latter rounds. When asked if his risk tolerance goes up as he moves deeper into the draft, Reese said, “You try to pick the cleanest guy possible in your first few rounds but you get later in the draft, guys have some warts to them in some kind of way in respect to injuries or maybe some off-the-field issues. You feel like you can take a risk on some guys, some talented players with some risk in the latter part of the draft. You try to limit the risk with the first part of your draft.”

Eli Manning: Every offensive player attended Giants 'voluntary' workouts

Quote

It's very clearly stated in the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL's owners and players. The early part of the offseason workout program is "voluntary."

If a player elects to workout at home or forego the program for whatever the reason, teams are forbidden to complain publicly. It's the player's prerogative, and well within the rules.

With a new offense to install and Tom Coughlin still the coach, none of the Giants offensive players have elected to travel that route this year. Wide receiver Victor Cruz passed on the "voluntary" workouts last year as he waited for a long-term contract he eventually received.

But according to quarterback Eli Manning, the entire offense was at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center this week to begin work on fixing the unit that owner John Mara labeled "broken" after a disastrous 2013.

"I'm not quite sure the numbers on what the percentage of participation is, but I feel it is very high. All the offensive guys are there," Manning said Sunday after shedding the protective boot on his surgically repaired ankle for the March of Dimes' annual March for Babies event. "We have a lot of work to do learning the new offense. We have a lot of new players also. I'm trying to put a lot of faces with names and getting to know your teammates on a personal side. I thought we had a good first week."

The rules finally permit that Manning can work alongside new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo in an offseason he admitted comes with an extra "sense of urgency." Even though Manning's likely to miss at least part of the upcoming OTAs and minicamp, there is plenty that can be accomplished. He can offer suggestions to the playbook and get a head-start on learning the new offense's intricacies.

Manning is already digging into the playbook and working hand-in-hand with the new offensive boss. He considered it a productive first week that included plenty of studying at home.

"We got a lot of information, learned a lot asking a lot of questions about the offense," Manning said. "We made some strides, just got to keep working."

There is extra work to be done. Manning, 33, said it feels a lot like his freshman year in college or his first professional season. The new atmosphere seems to have lit a fire underneath him following a year where he threw a career-high 27 interceptions.

"[The changes] bring a sense of urgency to this time of year, to the offseason," Manning said. "For me, [it's] getting healthy, meeting teammates and learning a new playbook. We have a lot of work to do. But [I'm] enjoying the competition of it all, the urgency we're having right now."

It wasn't like that the past few seasons when Manning knew Kevin Gilrbide's offense like the back of his hand. Gilbride retired following last season. That's why it raised some red flags earlier this month when wide receivers Rueben Randle and Jerrel Jernigan didn't join Manning at Duke University for workouts. Randle has since explained he had to take care care of a personal issue.

In addition to the new scheme and the shift from the Coughlin/Gilbride offense to what Manning conceded was now McAdoo's offense, the Giants added 15 new veterans through free agency. Eight of those are on the offensive side of the ball, including four offensive linemen.

It's going to take significant time and effort for everyone to become familiar with each other on and off the field.

"You just really have to get comfortable with one another," offensive lineman Chris Snee said earlier in the week. "I mean, eat together just to get to know each other because this is the most change that we've encountered here. We have to get to know each other quickly because really the time that we have is a month less than we usually have."

Fortunately, they're able to do it as a complete offensive unit right from the start of the offseason program, even if attendance is "voluntary."

Vet DT Kevin Williams says NYG still in the "mix' for him

Quote
"Former Vikings star defensive tackle Kevin Williams said it’s a possibility he has played his last NFL game.

Williams, who wasn’t offered a deal to re-sign with the Vikings as a free agent, has taken visits to the New York Giants and Seattle. He wants to play a 12th NFL season, but said Thursday he might not if it’s just for a low-value contract.

“If it’s not worth the risk of going back out there, I can’t say I’ll do it,’’ Williams, 33, said in a phone interview. “I don’t see it at this point (taking a low-value deal), but you never know.’’

The six-time Pro Bowler said he would be at peace if he’s played his last NFL game.

“Oh, yeah,’’ Williams said. “I’m not one of those guys that’s afraid to go home. I’m comfortable going home.’’

Still, Williams, who made $4.9 million last year, remains hopeful of getting a deal that would make it worthwhile to play next season. He said his visit to Seattle on Monday went well.

“It was a good visit, but nothing was decided,’’ he said. “I’m just waiting. I talked to pretty much everyone, the whole staff, general manager and coach, players. It was a mini-Vikings reunion.’’

There are several Minnesota players and coaches with the defending Super Bowl champions. Wide receiver Percy Harvin and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell were two Williams named that he ran into.

Williams said the Giants, whom he visited two weeks ago, remain in the mix for him. He said he’s talked to a few other teams that he wouldn’t name but hasn’t taken any other visits and has none others planned."

New York Giants to Allow NFL Network Camera in Draft War Room: For the first time ever, the New York Giants will allow a camera inside their draft “war room”. The Giants are one of 16 teams that have given permission to The NFL Network to place a camera in the room where the draft-day decisions are made by General Manager Jerry Reese, Vice President of Player Evaluation Marc Ross, Head Coach Tom Coughlin, and others.
