Will Beatty transcript

April 22, 2014

A: ...Right now we’re all in the meeting rooms watching film so right now I’m keeping pace with them. When we’re allowed to get out on the field I’m going to make sure that I can do field work. If I’m not full-go strong… we’re not in helmets and shoulder pads hitting to require that anyway. It’s like, I want to be ready when they say it’s time to put on pads. Let me put on pads and see what I can do. That’s being smart during the offseason, building and getting stronger but not trying to be stupid about it and say that I’m Superman.

Q: You’ll have certain hurdles set up that you have to do to get medical clearance to get out there and participate?

A: It’s rehab so it’s like, I haven’t been like, ‘OK, you’re on your own, do whatever you want to do.’ It’s knowing that you had an injury and it has been a few months after that. I don’t think you can just go run a marathon and everything’s going to be alright. We have to build up. That’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to build up so when it is time for me to run that I can run and when it’s time for me to hit I can hit. They’re giving me short timelines. Focus on the day, let’s do this, let’s do that, rather than the big picture that it’s not going to take care of itself unless you focus on the little things anyway.

Q: Usually those small steps do add up to a large step. Are you almost ruling out to some degree that you would be ready for Week 1 or is that something realistic?

A: No. My mind is like, do what I can do to get out there when everybody does. I’m trying to keep pace with everybody else. That’s my benchmark. Like ‘OK, we’re out there on the field today. Let me get out there and see what I can do.’ The coaches aren’t telling me I can’t do it so that’s a good thing. They’re not saying no.

Q: So Week 1 is still in play?

A: You don’t want to hear no and right now I haven’t heard no. TC would know more of the ins and outs of the days. We haven’t sat down and been like, ‘OK, this date right here you’re doing this.’ It’s, ‘You did this today, let’s improve on it tomorrow and the next day. Let’s come back, let’s move forward and not have any setbacks.’

Q: But they haven’t given you a date for when you can start running or anything like that?

A: I’m doing running, I’m doing movement right now on the field but it’s more straight ahead, it’s not like chasing a chicken. I am doing running, I m doing movement. I’m doing footwork to make sure that I’ve got mobility and that the stretching is still there. Running is not the thing I have to do. I have to be able to run and hit somebody and move somebody so it’s not just like, ‘You can run, you’re good to go.’

Q: How much do you, now that you’re rehabbing, look back at your season last year and maybe what didn’t go right or what did go right?

A: The good thing about this year is we have a new offensive coordinator. We have a lot of new players that, looking back on last year, it’s not going to say what the team this year is going to be like. You have so much going on that it’s, ‘What are we doing? What’s going on today? How are you learning the new stuff that’s being thrown at you?’ That’s going to determine how our year turns out. We don’t have time to worry about the past. The past is behind us. We have to stay focused now to make sure that we have a better future.

Q: You didn’t’ study anything or look back? Obviously it was not the year you had hoped?

A: It wasn’t the year we hoped.

Q: I’m talking about you, your performance.

A: Coming off an injury it’s like, ‘The year did not end well for me but I have a chance to start a new year fresh with a new coordinator, that everyone has to learn these plays.’ It’s not like, ‘You’ve been here five years, you know these plays, you have it down.’ We’re all on the same page so that’s my concern. And try not to let the rehab or fact that I got injured affect me from moving forward. I’m trying to keep pace with everyone else.

Q: I know your timeline is vague. I just wanted to make sure I got this right. You don’t know yet about training camp or opening day? All of that is still to be determined, right?

A: Who knows the future? I know today I’m doing good. I know today I am past expectations of the doctor and I want to make sure tomorrow I’m the same way. I want to make sure I keep improving so when it is time for opening day, I’m there. When it is time to put on pads for the first time, I can put on pads. Those are my goals, to hit those, I guess, mile markers.

A:… I got carted off the field, went to the hospital, did surgery. They were like, ‘Surgery will be the best way to get you back the fastest.’ I left the hospital, came right to the training room and they were like, ‘Let’s start moving that knee.’

Q: Wasn’t there a break, too?

A: My tibia, yeah. But it was more bone than ACL, MCL or stuff like that. I did ask the doctor not to tell me too much information because opening me up is not something I want to hear about. Tell me what you need to tell me. Let’s get this fixed and let’s move on.

Q: What did they tell you about recovery time?

A: They didn’t give me a date per se. It was more of, ‘Let’s see what you can handle. Come back and let me check on the surgery. Let’s make sure and build you up some more.’

Slimmed-Down Pierre-Paul Hopes for Return to JPP of Old

Quote
When Jason Pierre-Paul arrived for Giants’ training camp last year, there was a lot of him to love.

285 pounds worth.

The hefty JPP caught the ire of Tom Coughlin as the coach let media know at the 2013 NFL’s annual meetings that the standout defensive end reported to camp over weight, a circumstance that potentially contributed to an off year.

“He was big when he came to camp,” Coughlin told The New York Post.

So when Pierre-Paul spoke to media for the first time this season during the second day of the Giants’ offseason conditioning program, he made sure to let all those in attendance in on a little secret.

“I’m lighter,” Pierre-Paul said. “I’m 270 pounds, and I feel good at the weight I am.”

Since recording 16.5 sacks his sophomore season, one of the league’s best defensive ends has been playing at a level far below the one displayed on New York’s Super Bowl Championship run. In the last two seasons, Pierre-Paul has managed just 8.5 sacks.

Last year’s total of two in 11 games were the lowest of his career. Even as a rookie playing behind Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka and Osi Umenyiora, the former first-round pick was able to muster 4.5.

Despite this, Pierre-Paul said he feels no added pressure to show doubters he’s the JPP of old.

“I think I have a job to do,” Pierre-Paul said. “It’s not showing people what player I can be. I know what player I am and what I bring to the team. I just have to go out there and we have to make the playoffs and try to get back to the Super Bowl.”

There’s also little question in the 25-year-old’s mind that he can return to the player that once garnered “Defensive Player of the Year” consideration.

“I’m going to go out there and play the game like I was 21 again,” Pierre-Paul said. “This whole offseason I’ve just been training and thinking that I want to get back on the football field. It’s coming.”

With Justin Tuck playing on the opposite coast, New York will need JPP more than ever. Throughout his career, Pierre-Paul has always had proven veterans to look up to in the meeting room.

Umenyiora is gone, Linval Joseph too, leaving just Pierre-Paul and Kiwanuka to lead a group that is otherwise occupied by unproven commodities.

“Most of the D-line is going to look up to me and Kiwi,” Pierre-Paul said. “We’ve got young guys in there, guys from other teams, but we’ve been here the longest, so they have to follow us. We’ve got to lead.”

The Giants spent the offseason rebuilding, retooling and upgrading a secondary that had long be an after thought to Jerry Reese. Throughout his tenure, the GM operated under the belief a strong past rush could mask a weakness in the last line of defense.

While the strategy worked for two championships, teams have found a counter to the Giants’ ferocious pass rush. Quarterbacks have worked to get rid of the ball quick, well before the cornucopia of defensive ends reached the opponent’s passer.

After bringing down the quarterback 46 times in 2010 and 48 in 2011, the Giants haven’t recorded more than 34 sacks in either of the last two seasons.

Aside from signing run-stopper Robert Ayers, the Giants have yet to truly make a splash to upgrade its pass rush. Sure, there’s Damontre Moore, but for now last year’s third-round pick is more of potential than anything proven.

If Pierre-Paul returns to form, it may be a bigger upgrade to the Giants’ defense than any free-agent signing or draft pick. To Pierre-Paul, that means staying healthy.

“I’m still continuing to rehab no matter what,” Pierre-Paul said. “I just want to be the guy that helps my team out, be out there as much as possible and stay healthy.”

Wake-Up Call: DRC Vs. Megatron

Quote
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie talked about what goes into his preparation when getting set to face an opponent.

“I flip the book open and I look at each receiver. I look at speed first, that’s the first thing I do, and I see what they ran in the 40,” said Rodgers-Cromartie. “Then I look at the statistics and see how many times they’ve been thrown at.”

And what does Calvin Johnson clock in at?

“He is 4.38. Everybody else 4.5 or plus,” said Rodgers-Cromartie.

“For 4.5 and plus, I say in my head I’m going to beat you with my feet. I’m not really going to put my hands on you and try to slow you down because I know I’m quick enough to react. A guy like Calvin Johnson, I want to try to disrupt him, get up there put my hands on him and slow him down, not let him get going.”

Rodgers-Cromartie said that he has not only experience but success shadowing Johnson. The stats seem to back him up. In a meeting between the Lions and DRC’s old team, the Cardinals, back in 2009, Johnson was limited to three catches for 35 yards.

“The only tendency you can get on guys like Calvin Johson is you know they’re going to get the ball, you know it’s coming no matter what situation it is, first, second or third down,” said Rodgers-Cromartie. “Just go out and play. You might think they going to run a deep in because the formation says so but you still have to go out and cover.

“You know he’s the guy who can beat you. You know what he’s capable of, at the same time you have to line up and make him beat you. That’s the way I was always taught, make him beat you.”

Not really sure what he means exactly... does he question Randle's ability to replace Nicks? Pretty bold statement to make about the receiving corps.

Well.. We could use some depth no? Since mcadoo will incorporate 4 wr's plays in offense. We need to be prepared for injuries.

Per Ralph: Giants very high on Evans

Quote
So who does Cruz think the Giants should select? He tabbed Texas A& M wide receiver Mike Evans as the ideal candidate to fill that outside role. He’s not the only one either. Several sources have told the Daily News recently that Evans, a 6-5, 225-pounder, is up near the top of the Giants’ draft board and a player they very seriously have their eye on at No. 12.

Ralph V. is normally spot on when it comes to the Giants 1st round draft pick. I still don't think Evans gets past Tampa, Buffalo, or Detroit.

One thing is for sure we're going to get a very good player in the 1st either at 12 or if he trade down which I don't see us doing.

I don't have the slightest clue who we are drafting this year.... there has been SO many different mocks and info about possibilities... moreso than any year it seems. Us sitting at 12 is so nice because we're going to get a great football player regardless who the selection is.

Depending on who is there at 12 it could be Donald, Ebron, Martin, Evans, Barr..... or it could be a complete shocker that no one would have guessed.

There's so many smokescreens right now you don't know what to think.

Stevie Brown Heard From Other Teams, But Always Knew He'd Be Back

Quote
Stevie Brown re-signed with the Giants early on in free agency then had a front row seat for one of the most aggressive offseasons in team history.

Brown saw the secondary bolstered with the signings of Quintin Demps, Walter Thurmond and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. It wasn't what he saw coming.

"To a degree, yes (I was surprised)," Brown said. "You have never really heard about the Giants making that many moves but I’m not upset about it. It all looks like it’s going to be for the best. As long as we can get in here and talk and gel together, I think we’re going to be a great secondary."

But Brown was glad to be back. The Giants waited out the exclusive rights period, and Brown, who broke out in 2012 with eight interceptions before tearing his ACL in the preseason last year, said he heard enough rumblings from other teams to know he could get a job elsewhere.

He just didn't want to.

"You hear from certain teams that you like, you hear from certain teams you don’t like, but all-and-all and I always wanted to be here so whenever we were able to get what we wanted here it was easy to decide," Brown said.

The good news for the Giants is that Brown tore his ACL early enough that his rehab shouldn't railroad the team's offseason plans. Though it usually takes a player more than a year to fully recover, Brown is confident that he can be the same player he was in 2012.

"If I’m not 100, I definitely expect to be high in the 90s," he said. "By when it happened to when I actually have to play again, I get a full year of recovery. You see a lot of people come back and they’re effective off of seven months, eight months of rehab. I have a full 12 months so I expect to be pretty much close to 100."

Brown said he could play today if need be -- a welcome sign especially with some trouble brewing at the position already.

"I don’t have any limits whenever I do anything. I feel great. I can run, I can jump, I can land on one leg, I can land on my left leg, push off equally off of both legs whenever they put the little tracking unit on me and measure when I was rehabbing and doing everything. All my stuff was balanced out. I feel great.

Hope he returns to pre-injury form.... his breakout season was amazing. The ball seems to gravitate to him.
