If 2014 is Antrel Rolle's Giant finale, the safety is ready to 'go out with a bang'

Quote
Antrel Rolle has one more year left on his contract and wants to prove to the Giants that he deserves a few more.

Antrel Rolle believes he has four “great” seasons left in him, but there’s no way to know if they’ll be with the Giants. He’s 31 years old, will be 32 in December, and is only signed through the end of this season. There’s no guarantee he’ll get a long-term contract offer from the Giants or any contract offer beyond this season at all.

Rolle understands that, so while he told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Wednesday morning that playing the rest of his career with the Giants would be his “ideal” scenario, he’s preparing for the possibility that this season in New York could be his last.

“If this happens to be my last year with the Giants, it will be my best season,” Rolle said on SiriusXM’s The Opening Drive. “So I’m going to go out with a bang.”

There’s a long way to go, of course, before anyone knows if this is Rolle’s Giant finale, though he said “Hopefully it’s not.” He’s entering his 10th NFL season and fifth with the Giants, and he’s unquestionably become one of the leaders of both the defense and the team.

In fact, one day after telling the media that he’s just one of “53 leaders” on the Giants, he admitted to SiriusXM NFL Radio that he looks at the Giants’ defense as his.

“The way I look at the locker room, you know, these are my babies,” Rolle said. “These are my guys, these are my teammates, these are my brothers, these are the guys that I must protect at every given second that I’m there, that I’m with them on the field (and) off the field.”

““As far as it being my locker room or my defense yeah, I feel like I do hold a certain kind of title.”

And it’s a title he hopes to convince the Giants that he’s capable of holding for the rest of his career.

“For myself, that’s something that would be an ideal situation,” Rolle said. “That’s something that would be perfect. If I had to write a book it would definitely be written that way in my eyes. But we all know that’s not my call.

“Hopefully I go out there and produce enough that the Giants want to bring me back. It’s up to my performance first and foremost as to what the Giants are even looking to do. And then it’s up to the Giants to make that decision.”

Cruz on the new offense

Quote
Cruz has been reprogrammed. With the hiring McAdoo comes a different philosophy. And as the Giants install the new scheme this offseason, Victor Cruz explained the differences through the eyes of a wide receiver. “As far as my route-running was concerned as a slot position [in the past seasons], a lot of my routes were determined against what the secondary was doing, what type of coverage they were in, and that would dictate my route,” Cruz said.

Now?

“As far as this offense in concerned, it’s lot more of just ‘your route is your route’ and you can dictate that off the coverage and you know what you have and Eli can find you within those different holes. Now it’s a lot less dependent on what my body language is and Eli reading that. It’s more so him reading the coverage and finding me in those open holes.”

LOVE it.... no more option routes galore

Eli Gives His Take On The New Offense - Thinks it will be like GB

http://www.giants.com/videos/videos/Eli-Manning-gives-his-take-on-the-new-offense/09aaf23a-0828-4ae2-bb31-b07106b731d0 - video

Quote
Gone from last year's team is Hakeem Nicks, Brandon Myers, Kevin Boothe, David Baas and Andre Brown, plus the retirements of long-time Giants Brandon Jacobs and David Diehl. But the biggest departure of them all, one that changed the entire culture and makeup of the offense was long-time offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, who retired from the NFL in the winter.

With Gilbride stepping away, the Giants brought in a fresh name with new ideas for the offense in Ben McAdoo, former quarterbacks coach of the Green Bay Packers and now the new Giants offensive coordinator who will be implementing some of the Packers offense into the Giants offense in 2014.

In Green Bay with Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers, they ran the West Coast offense and over the last couple of years, were considered one of the top offenses in the league and with one of their former coaches now bringing some of their ideas and philosophies to New Jersey, it has the Giants fan base excited after a disappointing 7-9 season.

For Eli Manning, he's never ran the West Coast offense in his professional career, but at 33-years-old and coming off one of the worst seasons in his career, change can always be welcomed, especially if it produces positive results. This week at the team's voluntary workout, Manning told the media that with McAdoo running the offense and calling the plays, he'll see the similarities from the Packers offense in the Giants offense this year.

"I think it will be similar to what they did in Green Bay," Manning said Tuesday while sporting a walking boot fresh off ankle surgery. "That's where Ben came from, so I think it will be pretty similar to that offense. I've never been in a West Coast offense, so I don't know if it's exactly a West Coast or a form of it, or anything at all like it. I think it has some tendencies to it, the protections and stuff, but every offense has it's own little dial and uniqueness that makes it work."

While the offensive system and strategy will be a big change for Manning and company in 2014, it's a system that Rodgers has thrived in over the last couple of years and could allow the two-time Super Bowl MVP to have a bounce back season and get over a year where he had 27 interceptions and took 39 sacks.

"It is a little bit different than our past offense with the timing of the routes and the ball coming out quickly," Manning said. "I'm hoping that I have success in this and become a better player."

For years, fans have wanted change in the offense and wanted a new mind to run the offense and with Gilbride's retirement, it's exactly what those fans got when they hired McAdoo. Now it'll be time to see if Manning and the offense can find the same kind of success that Rodgers has had with it in Green Bay.

Prince wants his 2015 option picked up, Giants remain undecided for now

Quote
Prince Amukamara will be with the Giants for the 2014 season. Now he wants them to tell him he’s still in their plans for 2015, too.

The Giants have until May 3 to decide whether to pick up the fifth-year option on Amukamara – a decision every team is facing with their 2011 first-round picks. According to a team source, the Giants remain undecided in part because the option would trigger a salary of about $7 million for Amukamara in 2015.

Amukamara, one of the Giants starting cornerbacks, isn’t shy about saying he hopes they do.

“It shows that the team wants you,” he said. “And who wouldn’t want to feel wanted?”

The rule on the option year is that Amukamara would get a salary equal to the average of the top 25 highest-paid cornerbacks in the league – approximately $7 million. It would immediately make him one of the highest-paid players in the Giants’ rebuilt secondary and on the entire team.

The salary wouldn’t be guaranteed, however, and the Giants could still negotiate a long-term deal at different terms long before the 2015 season – something they could do even if they decline to pick up the option. They could also cut him before 2015 and not pay him that salary, too.

So it’s not an easy decision, despite the fact that he’s shown a lot of progress in recent years and there are some who think he’s on the verge of becoming one of the best young cornerbacks in the league.

But Amukamara wants the option picked up and admitted he might be a little insulted if it isn’t. “I would say, naturally maybe a little bit,” he said. “But I’ve been hearing this NFL thing is all business so I definitely can’t take it personal.”

A team source said the Giants likely won’t make a decision on Amukamara’s option until sometime next week. In the meantime, Amukamara said he can’t help thinking about what the Giants will do.

“I’d be lying if I (said I) didn’t,” he said. “But I can’t really worry about that. I’ve been only focusing on the things that I can control. Well, I could’ve controlled whether the Giants did it or not by my play the last three years, but right now I can’t really worry about that.”

Hope we can work out a long term deal soon

David Wilson Sets Expectations For Return

Quote
"RB David Wilson spoke to the media about his recovery from injury and his expectations for return

In his unique way, David Wilson said today all that stands between him and a return to the football field is an MRI that will convince his doctors he is healthy enough to play.

“I passed every test except a picture and that’s the only reason I’m not on the field,” Wilson said. “Because of pictures. Right now we just need to get the photograph that we need.”

Of course, the story is more complex than that. Wilson missed the last 11 games of the 2013 season after suffering a neck injury vs. Philadelphia on Oct. 6 that forced him to go on injured reserve. On Jan. 16, he underwent surgery, a fusion of the vertebrae to repair the herniated disc in his neck.

The Giants have hoped for the best for their 2012 first-round draft choice, but have not offered a definitive prognosis because of the significance and placement of the injury. No one will take a risk with a neck issue.

But Wilson is eager to return to the field and said he “wants to” and “expects to” be cleared for the Giants’ organized team activities and minicamp. He just needs an MRI that will prompt a doctor to tell Wilson, “Go play.”

“We're just waiting for the picture we need,” Wilson said.

Wilson said no one advised him to stay on the sideline. Asked if he is worried that he’s taking a risk, he said, “no, not at all.” Questioned whether the injury could re-occur, he said, “Freak of nature, anything can happen again.”

One reason Wilson is likely so calm and confident is that his neck never hurt.

“I never had pain from the injury, even after it happened, the day after it happened, the moment after it happened,” he said. “I’m in the locker room telling the coaches, ‘Let me go back out there, I don’t feel anything.’ I snuck out on the field and was removed.

“It’s hard to realize the severity when you don’t feel any pain or symptoms. I was limited to nothing and that’s the same way I am now. The only thing I had was the cut in front of my neck and that was the only time I felt pain, because I got cut. Right now I feel fine, before I felt fine and right now we’re just waiting for the picture we need.”

If Wilson returns to the field, he will likely be one of the Giants’ most dynamic weapons. As a rookie, he set a Giants’ single-season record with 1,533 kickoff return yards and rushed for 358 yards and four touchdowns. Wilson and recently-signed Rashad Jennings could team to give the Giants a vastly improved backfield.

“As far as a one-two punch, that’s something we’re going to strive to become,” Jennings said. “He brings an element to the game that’s unique and special. I think every other running back brings something unique and special to this offense. We’ll see how time plays itself out, but I definitely want every running back to contribute as much as they possibly can.”

“Both of us can be an every down back, but the way the game is today, it’s not going to be one guy,” Wilson said. “There are very few teams that have one running back that’s always in there.”

After missing most of last season, Wilson wants a chance to be back out there for the Giants."

Ben McAdoo wants a 'top four' offense, 'top four' quarterback and Super Bowl berth

Quote

New offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo had a chance to make a first impression on Monday when Giants players arrived for the first day of voluntary offseason workouts.

He couldn't be on the field coaching. He couldn't watch his quarterback, who is still in a walking boot, do anything more than mark up a white board. He couldn't spend as much time as he'd like installing a new offense.

But McAdoo did get to lay out his expectations, and in his first season as an NFL coordinator, he has some far reaching goals already.

"He came in the first day and said 'Our goal is to be a top-four offense, to have an elite top-four QB and to make it to the Super Bowl," left tackle Will Beatty said. "Which was exactly what we wanted to hear.

"He said 'We're going to make some changes. Some changes have already been made with all the new players.' But he has a path for us to get there. Follow his path, and we're going to make it to the Super Bowl. So I said okay, I'm hopping on board."

For reference, a top-four offense last year averaged between 399.4 (Saints) and 457.3 (Broncos) yards per game. The top scoring teams -- Bears, Broncos, Eagles and Patriots -- were all between 27.6 and 37.9 points per game.

The league's top four quarterbacks were Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Matt Stafford and Matt Ryan.

"He is very energetic," left tackle Will Beatty said. "He had a lot of positive things to add to the team. He has a goal and a plan, and I'm trying to hang on to it and jump on board with what he has to say."

Those close to McAdoo say he's able to sustain that energy longer than most coaches, which will prove crucial during the installation period. The offense will be simpler for wide receivers and running backs, which should translate to a more relaxed Eli Manning.

"I’m excited," Manning said when asked about his first days with McAdoo. "It’s been a fun last couple days getting the offense and learning it. I think it’ll bring a lot of opportunities and be able to move the ball and score. I’m excited about… it does bring a sense of urgency to the offseason this time of year. In some years you come in kind of knowing an offense and you’re looking to get better. Now you’ve got to learn new things, different techniques, different fundamentals. A lot going on, the mind’s swimming a little bit right now. It’s an exciting time. I look forward to conquering it."

Manning is biased, though. After all, one of the new goals will turn him into a top four quarterback again.

Interesting quote from Cruz

Quote
In an interview that will air on Thursday's edition of "NFL Total Access," Victor Cruz pitched the idea of selecting a wide receiver in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft because the Giants "definitely" need help at the position.

"A (big-play receiver) is something we need in this offense to be successful," Cruz continued. "An outside guy that can do the job and that can help fuel all the other receivers in the locker room and put some fire up under them to get them where they have to be."

Cruz's top choice for the Giants at No. 12 overall? Texas A&M wide receiver Mike Evans.

Not really sure what he means exactly... does he question Randle's ability to replace Nicks? Pretty bold statement to make about the receiving corps.
