The NFL met with the Saints about their “bounty” program the day before their Wild Card playoff game against the Lions, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday at the NFL league meetings in Florida.
“I sent Jeff Pash and our head of security Jeff Miller down to meet with (Saints owner) Mr. Benson I believe it was the Friday before a Saturday game,” Goodell said.
“The point was to make it clear that we had new and credible information that a bounty program may exist and that he should make it very clear beginning with the game the next day that there should be no bounty system in play while our investigation continues.”
It’s unclear if a “bounty” existed for the Lions game and 49ers game the following week. The NFL has not discovered any specific target of a Lions player in their investigation.
The Saints were fined $500,000 and had two second-round draft picks (2012 and 2013) taken from them as a result of the investigation. Also, head coach Sean Payton is suspended the entire year, general manager Mickey Loomis is suspended the first eight games of this season and assistant coach Joe Vitt is suspended without pay for the first six games
Sheesh they have been fined and penalized already. Why are they still messing with this? It didn't make a difference in the game, and they aren't going to give us a win and replay the playoff games or anything.Just my 2 cents
