Giants sign KR/FS Quintin Demps

While Demps regular position is at free safety, he was signed by the Giants for his return skills. In 2013, Demps had 33 returns for 30.1 average and had one touchdown; he has two career touchdowns in his six-year career that started back in 2008 when he was a fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles.

As a safety, Demps played in all 16 games last season for Kansas City and started in six of them and had four interceptions to go along with 36 tackles and 10 pass deflections. The six starts were not only the most of his career, but the only starts of his career, as he spent his first five seasons solely as a backup.

After spending two seasons in Philadelphia, Demps played two seasons with the Houston Texans and also played a season with the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League in 2010 following being waived by the Eagles in September of 2010.

With the departure of Ryan Mundy in free agency, Demps provides solid depth behind starters Antrel Rolle, Stevie Brown and Will Hill; with Brown coming off an ACL injury that cost him the entire 2013 year and if Hill gets punished by the NFL again, Demps ends up being insurance at safety, but more importantly, the Giants have finally made a move to improve their special teams to add an experienced kick returner.

Walter Thurmond, Giants agree to one-year contract

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000334413/article/walter-thurmond-giants-agree-to-oneyear-contract

Quote
The New York Giants entered free agency with an upgrade at cornerback as the highest priority.

After missing out on Alterraun Verner and others, the Giants agreed on a one-year, $3.5 million contract with former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Walter Thurmond, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday, per a person who had spoken with the player.

Signing Thurmond will not preclude the Giants from chasing Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who is visiting the team Sunday. The Giants still want DRC "badly," according to Rapoport.

Thurmond was one of the NFL's premier nickelback's last season, netting 33 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and one interception. Entering free agency, he was ranked No. 7 on Around The League's list of the top 25 available defensive backs.

His market was perhaps depressed by last season's four-game suspension and checkered injury history, which includes a nasty broken leg and college knee injuries.

He met up with former Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley in Jacksonville, but left without a contract. He later went back to the West Coast for a visit with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Giants are getting a talented young cornerback just entering his prime. The questions are whether Thurmond can stay healthy and if he has the size to handle a full-time role.

Demps should lift Giants' sad return game

Quote
So many things went wrong for the New York Giants in 2013 that some are easy to ignore. The offense bore the brunt of the blame for the 0-6 start and 7-9 season, and justifiably so. But the 2013 Giants were bad at many things, and the returning of kicks and punts was a significant problem that had to be addressed.

Enter Quintin Demps, who spent a good chunk of his early Sunday morning informing his Twitter followers that he'd agreed on a new contract with the Giants. Demps was a reserve safety and kickoff return man for the Chiefs in 2013. His kick-return average of 30.1 yards was third in the NFL behind Minnesota's Cordarrelle Patterson and Dallas' Dwayne Harris, and he did run one back for a touchdown -- the second of his career.

As a team, the 2013 Giants ranked 27th in the NFL with a kick-return average of 21.2. Obviously, more goes into it than the skills of the return man himself -- i.e., they need to block better in the return game. But Demps has blazing speed on returns and should definitely provide a boost to a unit that was a significant problem last year.

Demps had a +7.1 KR grade behind only Cordarelle Patterson

Pro Football Focus ‏@PFF 6h
