THE SERIES
SERIES RECORD: Miami leads 16-12 (including playoffs)
AT MIAMI: Dolphins lead 11-6
AT KANSAS CITY: Chiefs lead 6-5
LAST MEETING: 2011 at Kansas City; Dolphins 31, Chiefs 3
HISTORY LESSON: The Dolphins are facing the Chiefs at home in September for the first time in almost 30 years — Sept. 22, 1985, to be exact. Just like this year’s matchup, kickoff that day was in the late afternoon. The game was tied 0-0 at halftime before the Dolphins exploded for four touchdowns in the second half — on two Dan Marino passes and two Ron Davenport runs — to win 31-0.
SERIES TREND: This has been a series of streaks, and it’s the Dolphins who have one going right now. The Dolphins have won the last three meetings, starting with a 13-10 victory in Miami in 2006 and followed by a 38-31 victory on a frigid day in Kansas City on the next-to-last weekend of the 2008 regular season, and then with the 31-3 victory at Arrowhead Stadium three years ago. The Dolphins also have winning streaks of five and four games in the series, which began with the Chiefs winning the first six encounters from 1966 to 1969.
SCOUTING REPORT
CHIEFS’ RECORD: 0-2
LAST GAME: Lost at Denver, 24-17
OVERVIEW: The Chiefs are looking to get things back on track after a difficult start to the 2014 regular season, which began with a 16-point upset loss at home against the Tennessee Titans. Kansas City was one of the biggest surprises in the NFL in 2013 after going from 2-14 the year before to finishing 11-5 and earning a playoff berth. But the Chiefs sustained heavy losses in free agency, particularly on the offensive line, and then lost Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson and starting defensive tackle Mike DeVito in the loss against Tennessee.
KEY NEW FACES: LB Dee Ford (draft-1st round), G Zach Fulton (draft-6th), K Cairo Santos (rookie FA), LB Josh Mauga (N.Y. Jets), DE Vance Walker (Oakland), T Ryan Harris (Houston) KEY VETERANS GONE: T Branden Albert, CB Dunta Robinson, WR Dexter McCluster, G Geoff Schwartz, G Jon Asamoah, S Kendrick Lewis, DT Tyson Jackson, CB Brandon Flowers, K Ryan Succop
