Hakeem Nicks Not Expected to Re-Sign with New York Giants: According to NFL.com, soon-to-be unrestricted free agent wide receiver Hakeem Nicks is not expected to re-sign with the New York Giants when free agency begins in March.

NFL.com is reporting that two of the reasons why Nicks will not be re-signed are his disappointing play in 2012 and 2013, and a string of team-imposed fines. Apparently, Nicks has been fined repeatedly for being late to team meetings and missing medical treatments. NFL.com says the fines were “in the thousands for each transgression.” Nicks also supposedly was battling through “several” injuries.

Kevin Gilbride jr. to TE Coach, Sean Ryan back to WR coach

I like it.... our coaching staff is all set!!!

Still upset we let pope go and now he signed with Dallas.... oh well

Quote
Sean Ryan, who was the quarterbacks coach the previous two seasons, will now coach the wide receivers, the position he held in 2010-11. Ryan is entering his eighth season on the Giants’ staff.

Kevin M. Gilbride, the wide receivers coach in 2012-13, is the new tight ends coach. He has been on the staff since 2010.

Since the end of the with the 2013 season, three offensive coaches left the team: coordinator Kevin Gilbride, who retired, and tight ends coach Michael Pope and running backs coach Jerald Ingram were relieved of their duties.

Three coaches were added: McAdoo, who was the Green Bay Packers’ quarterbacks coach, replaced Gilbride; Craig Johnson, who had been coaching quarterbacks for the Minnesota Vikings and is the new running backs coach; and Langsdorf.

The only offensive coaches who will return in the same position are line coach Pat Flaherty (who has mentored the offensive line since Tom Coughlin arrived in 2004); his assistant, Lunda Wells; and offensive assistant Ryan Roeder.

Giants Make Danny Langsdorf(new QB coach) Hiring Official, Completing Offensive Coaching Staff

Quote
Langsdorf will coach quarterbacks, Sean Ryan will go back to handling wide receivers and Kevin M. Gilbride Jr. will coach the tight ends.

The New York Giants today made the hiring of Danny Langsdorf as quarterbacks coach official. That news was first reported over the weekend, but the Giants did not confirm it until Monday morning.

In addition, the Giants have shuffled two other coaching spots. Former quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan will return to coaching wide receivers, something he did for the Giants in 2010 and 2011. Kevin M. Gilbride Jr. will move from coaching wide receivers, which he has done the past two seasons, to coaching the tight ends.

The offensive staff looks like this:

-- Offensive Coordinator: Ben McAdoo
-- Quarterbacks Coach: Danny Langsdorf
-- Running Backs Coach: Craig Johnson
-- Wide Receivers Coach: Sean Ryan
-- Tight Ends Coach: Kevin M. Gilbride Jr.
-- Offensive Line Coach: Pat Flaherty

Flaherty is thus the only position coach who will hold the same post he held in 2013.

"I like the makeup of our offensive staff," head coach Tom Coughlin said.  "There are some obvious and very good offensive thoughts here. And then you bring in Ben McAdoo … I’m excited about that part of it as well. I think the combination of the fundamentals, the innovative ideas and concepts coming from the new coaches, combined with the coaches that we have here that are fundamentalists and very good coaches in their own right, I’m excited about this spring as we put together our identity as an offensive team again. First and foremost, it’s going to be good for our players."

In regards specifically to the hiring of Langsdorf here is what Coughlin had to say:

"When I went through the process of studying his years at Oregon State, I was very impressed with the number of quarterbacks that were highly, highly productive in the Oregon State program, including redshirt freshmen," Coughlin said. "And also in the years, with Jacquizz Rodgers, for example, they ran the ball. So he has adapted to a lot of different things. Then when I had the opportunity to interview him, I would take specific areas in which I think the college game is doing a darn good job, and his ability to relate and teach in these areas, I thought, was outstanding.

"The one thing that is very impressive is that Ben and Danny are fundamentalists, first and foremost, in how they teach. They both have extensive quarterback film and drill work which they teach off of and which relate to the fundamentals of the game – how you drop, how you set, how you save time, how you become more efficient, where’s the ball, where do you carry the ball, where’s your front foot. When the quarterbacks report back here, that is a very, very good way to start the progression of how the quarterback is developed fundamentally so he can contribute at the highest level in this form of offensive package. I’m very interested in that."

Langsdorf has been at Oregon State since 2005 as offensive coordinator. His hiring, along with that of the 36-year-old McAdoo as offensive coordinator, makes it obvious that Coughlin is ready for something much different offensively than what the Giants have done for the past decade.

"I think there is something to be said for taking some of the ideas that you see are most prevalent at the college level and bringing that to our game," Coughlin said. "And the combination is very interesting to me."

Not only is it interesting to Coughlin, but it will be interesting to everyone to see how the Giants mesh newer West Coast and collegiate concepts with the play-action/quick-strike style they have employed for the past decade.

Langsdorf will be entrusted with fixing the fundamentals of Eli Manning, who threw a career-worst 27 interceptions in 2013. Manning's 18 touchdown passes were also a career low for him in a full season.

"That was a very important part of our conversation and the interview," Langsdorf said. "He knows he’s got it in him, he’s played great football at times, but I think he had a little bit of an off year, a lot of turnovers. That’s something that we have to correct, do a better job in taking care of the ball and he stressed that, the importance of that for our entire team. That was part of the discussion, for sure, as well as developing some young guys to back him up."

Langsdorf isn't fazed by not having been in the NFL since 2004.

"I think really just working, getting back to the fundamentals and teaching the details of the position and implementing a new system are all things that are going to be fun to work with Eli on," Langsdorf said. "With Ben and what he’s presenting as a package for the Giants, I think all of those things together will be smooth. I think coaching is teaching, and I think if you’re a good teacher, you should be able to do that and teach well and communicate well at any level."

Bigger Role for Jerrel Jernigan possible in 2014

Quote
With the new hires at OC and QB coach there are some hints to what the new Giant offense will like. 1 player that could benefit greatly from the OC change is Jerrel Jernigan who never quite got his skill set maximized why Gilbride was the OC. Gilbride never quite figured out how to get 2 inside receivers going at the same time and the Giants lack of imagination involving personnel packages and formations doomed Jernigan. While at Troy Jernigan was lined up all over the field, in fact he had 48 rushing attempts his Senior year and finished 10th in the Nation in all purpose yards. Jernigan was used in the exact same way Randall Cobb of the Green Bay Packers was used at Kentucky. However when Jernigan reached the NFL the different formations and plays designed to get him the ball in space stopped while the Packers utilized those skills from Cobb. Now with the new direction of the offense beginning to take shape Jernigan may finally start seeing the plays called for him that Jerry Reese envisioned when selecting the Troy WR. With the loss of Nicks imminent getting offensive production from the entire offense could limit the sting and make the Giants harder to defend. Seeing how Cobb and Brandin Cooks from Langsdorf's Oregon State offense have been utilized its quite possible in 2014 Jernigan will be deployed in a similar fashion

Interesting Giants Super Bowl Facts:

- The Giants have won a Super Bowl on 4 different networks: 21 (CBS), 25 (ABC), 42 (Fox), 46 (NBC)

- Despite twice winning titles 4 years apart, the Giants had different starting WR's in '86 (Manuel and Robinson) and '90 (Ingram and Baker) AND in '07 (Plax and Toomer) and '11 (Nicks and Cruz). Although Toomer was a starter in '00.

- In 4 Super Bowl wins, the Giants have 1 turnover, Eli's dropped pass to Steve Smith in SB 42. In their one loss they had 5.

- The 1990 team beat every team they played. They went 13-3, split with Philly and avenged losses to the 49ers and Bills in the playoffs.

- In the 4 seasons they won the Super Bowl, the Giants combined record against current division opponents: Dallas (5-3), Philly (6-2), Washington (5-3).

- In the 4 Super Bowl winning seasons, the Giants have won more road games (6) than home games (4).

Also Each Super Bowl Win in additional to being on a different network, was in a different decade:

SBXXI (1980s)
SBXXV (1990s)
SBXLII (2000s)
SBXLVI (2010s)

and a different time zone:

SBXXI (Pacific)
SBXXV (Eastern)
SBXLII (Mountain)
SBXLVI (Central)

Nice words from John Fox. - Praises Mara + Tisch families, Tom Coughlin

Quote
JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- John Fox is back in New Jersey to coach the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. And while he obviously has a great deal on his mind as he prepares his team to play the Seattle Seahawks next Sunday, being in New Jersey brings back fond memories of his time spent as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator from 1997-2001.

"Great organization, tremendous families running the organization," Fox said of the Giants during a news conference shortly after the Broncos arrived in town Sunday afternoon. "Their head coach is probably one of the guys I've looked up to the most in this league. My sons went to school in Wayne, N.J., and we've got a lot of great memories here. It would be special to win the Super Bowl anywhere, it would be really special to win it here."

Fox's time with the Giants predated the current coach, Tom Coughlin, to whom he referred. But in answering a question about the heart surgery that forced him to miss four weeks of this current season, he did reference the fact that his heart condition, with which he was born, was discovered during one of his yearly physicals as a member of the Giants' coaching staff.

Fox left the Giants following the 2001 season to become the head coach of the Carolina Panthers, a position he would hold for nine years. The highlight of his time with the Giants, which he also referenced Sunday, was the NFC Championship Game following the 2000 season in which his defense shut out the Minnesota Vikings in a 43-0 victory that propelled the Giants into Super Bowl XXXV.

Never hear anything bad ever about the Giants organization.... can't ever recall anyone ever saying anything negative about our organization.... proud to be a Giants fan

As others have already pointed out, it looks like Jason Pierre-Paul won't need shoulder surgery. #NYG

On Giants front: Sounds like shoulder rehab going well for JPP and he won't need surgery. Was waiting until end of Jan to see how it did.

Hopefully this is good news and we don't find out in June that he needs surgery after all and will miss all of training camp...... Been there, done that.
