Former Packers QB Graham Harrell on McAdoo/Eli

Quote
Former Packers QB Graham Harrell to @SiriusXMNFL on how Ben McAdoo can help Eli Manning: "I think Ben's going to...
... be tough on him," Harrell said on SiriusXM NFL Radio's Late Hits on Wednesday night. "He’s going to coach him hard. That’s one thing I really respected about him while he was there. He tried to coach everyone tough. That can be tough, especially with Aaron who’s had so much success, who is such a good player. Well, now (McAdoo) s walking into a place with another quarterback who’s obviously a proven great player, a guy that’s won a lot of games, won Super Bowls. But Ben’s the kind of guy that’s going to come in and demand a lot out of him, expect a lot out of him, expect a lot of preparation. ... I definitely think that’s going to help with turnovers and stuff like that, just the preparation side, the demand that Ben’s going to put on him.

"And the Green Bay offense, or the offense that Ben’s going to bring to New York is going to be an offense that sets the quarterback up for success. ... I think he’s going to be good for Eli. I think Eli is a really good quarterback and can play in any offense, but I think Eli will be a great fit for Ben’s offense. I think it’s going to be a good match for each other. I think it can be set up for a fun year for the Giants." #NYG

Justin Pugh put on 2013 Pro Football Writers Rookie Team of the Year

Quote
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Justin Pugh, the Giants’ first round draft choice last year, has been named to the Pro Football Writers Association 2013 All-Rookie Team.

Pugh, the 19th overall selection in the draft, started all 16 games at right tackle. He was a) the first Giants rookie to start an entire 16-game season since defensive tackle Barry Cofield in 2006; b) the first offensive lineman to do it since David Diehl in 2003; and c) the first Giants’ first round draft choice to do so since Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor in 1981.

Pugh is just the fourth Giants first-round draft choice to start every game in his rookie season since the 1970 merger. The others were linebacker Jim Files (1970), guard John Hicks (1974) and Taylor.

Pugh reported to training camp in July with modest expectations.

“My whole goal was just to contribute and help the team win in any way possible, if it was on special teams or as a starting right tackle,” he said. “I wanted to play my part and show these guys that I came here to play and play well.”

Pugh said it was important to him to be able to line up and play every week.

“You’re just showing the guys in this locker room that you’re reliable and this organization can count on you to go out there and play every snap, every week, and you take pride in that,” Pugh said. “

The other tackle on the Al-Rookie team was San Diego’s D.J. Fluker, who was chosen 11th overall.

Ben McAdoo: 10 things you should know about the Giants' new offensive coordinator

"Ben McAdoo is the Giants' new offensive coordinator. So what do we know about him, other than that he was the Packers' quarterbacks coach the past two seasons?

1. His career is tracking toward a head coaching position. In fact, the Browns (I know, it doesn't really count) interviewed him for their HC job. "This is obviously a big step," McAdoo said after taking the Giants offensive coordinator job. "It's also another step in the progression of a coach's career. It's a golden opportunity for me. It's an opportunity I feel I've been groomed for." Look at the words he used: progression, groomed.

2. McAdoo installed the Packers' weekly red-zone package. Green Bay was sixth in the NFL in red-zone percentage in 2012, 26th this past season.

3. He signed a two-year contract with the Giants, making sure he had some job security with coach Tom Coughlin in the final year of his deal.

4. McAdoo had choices. He was in the running for a handful of jobs. Why the Giants? “Best organization in the NFL!” according to one league source.

5. He was hired over former Giants assistant Mike Sullivan, who got a public nod from WR Victor Cruz.

6. McAdoo is 36, and seems destined to be a head coach someday. The Giants now have control over his career.

7. He has no NFL playing experience and had to overcome player skepticism in Green Bay. "I'll say this, I think that the best teachers are the best coaches, "McAdoo said while in Green Bay. "If a former player is a great teacher, then that will only help him. I believe that's an advantage. But at the end of the day, I believe I'm a good teacher and I'm working at being a great teacher. I want to be the best teacher."

8. McAdoo appears to be another Packers quarterbacks coach destined to become a head coach, following Andy Reid and Mike McCarthy.

9. The Packers were grooming him to be quarterbacks coach long before he got that job two years ago. "Actually, this is something we've been preparing for," head coach Mike McCarthy said when McAdoo was promoted in 2012. "Ben has been an observant at the quarterback school. This is a promotion that we've been anticipating probably for the past two years." McAdoo left Green Bay because with Tom Clements as the Packers' OC, there was no logical promotion in sight after a successful stint as QBs coach.

10. McAdoo grew up in Western Pennsylvania, in a family of diehard Steelers fans. Who did the Packers beat to help McAdoo collect his only Super Bowl ring? The Steelers, of course."
