John McClain: Free saftety Ed Reed left Houston on Friday to return to Atlanta before moving on to another city for a previous engagement with his family.

The two sides remain close on a contract. Negotiations will continue over the weekend.

The Texans could have Reed under contract early next week.

Reed arrived Thursday morning on owner Bob McNair’s private jet and spent the afternoon meeting with coaches and executives. He then went to dinner with coaches and his former teammates from Miami, Chris Myers and Andre Johnson, and followed that with a stop at Pub Fiction in Midtown Houston with Myers and Johnson.

I'm going to cry if he ends up signing with the Patriots or 49ers. That's a worst-case scenario. But John McClain makes it seem like there is nothing to worry about.

Ed Reed has said he wants to play in the South and be close to New Orleans. So Houston is only 350 miles away from New Orleans.

Foxboro and San Francisco are so far away on the map. I think the Texans get it done. Just sucks it's not today.
