Doctors have recommended to New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul that, due to his shoulder injury, he not play again this season, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Friday.
A second team source said prior to the team's practice Friday that Pierre-Paul is "likely" to follow the advice of the medical personnel but declined to offer specifics about the advice.
Coach Tom Coughlin said Friday he wasn't aware if Pierre-Paul had been advised against playing again this season.
"He won't be cleared until the doctors feel that there's one particular part of the injury that is not going to occur," Coughlin said. "Until then, and if they do with the [three] remaining games, we're all in the same boat."
Pierre-Paul suffered the injury against Oakland on Nov. 10 but played in the Giants' next two games (against Green Bay and Dallas). He was on the field for less than half of the defensive plays against the Cowboys.
Pierre-Paul rode an exercise bike on the sideline during the portion of Thursday's practice open to the media. Afterward he said his shoulder was "getting better, day by day."
When asked about his status for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, Pierre-Paul responded, "I don't know yet."
It's been a disappointing season for Pierre-Paul, who has just two sacks, two years removed from finishing fourth in the league with 16.5. The Giants (5-8) are second-to-last in sacks with 25, behind only Jacksonville (23).
Pierre-Paul missed most of training camp recovering from back surgery. He returned for Week 1 but never got on track. He suffered a knee injury in Week 4 against Kansas City, then injured his shoulder in Week 10 against the Raiders. He played through those injuries before sitting out the past two weeks -- the first missed games of his four-year scareer.
I dont care what they think or whatnot, they need to bench JPP for good this season. No sense to risk his career on those last three games of season. Just focus on getting him to 100%
