I live down the road from a card/comic shop. I forgot to ask them if they have any gatherings there. I'll have to remember next time I'm there buying the kids some comics. I'd prefer to play irl as well for the value and interaction. It'd be easier to learn that way too.
I'm sure they do FNM if they sell cards there.
It's going to be hard to learn w/o some friends to play with regularly though.
If your kid's old enough, you might consider bringing him along. There's like 2 or 3 father/son duos who frequent my local store lol.
And like kold said, mtg Arena is, I think, free to download. If you just want to learn the game, playing their precon decks against AI is one way. But it's one of those "free" games where they want you to buy currency to actually have fun /w shit.

lolrip. what 2 cards?
also how is your LGS doing? Unfortunately the one i go to is about to go under (pretty much already has, been closed all week). There's another, much bigger store but the parking situation is blah, can't just go outside to smoke a bowl like i could at the shop i go to. Alot of people think that unless you're a big shop then it's only a matter of time before you go under.
http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/search_result.aspI drafted Ral, Izzet Viceroy pack 1 pick 1 (guess he's more like $6 now)
And Doom Whisperer Pack 3 pick 1 (thankfully was going Dimir already)
I like my LGS. No problem getting drafts to fill, good people, roomy location, room for people to smoke outside lol. The last few weeks, FNM has ranged from ~10 to ~22 people in a given night (for limited).
Sorry to hear about your LGS. Bad parking would be a deal-breaker for me, most likely.
