@davebirkett: Matthew Stafford got x-rays on his ribs and chest after the game. He looked to be in a lot of pain in the locker room.

Great

From : MLIVE
MINNEAPOLIS -- Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford underwent X-rays on his ribs and chest after Sunday's 26-16 loss against the Minnesota Vikings.

The results of those tests are unknown, and Stafford would not comment on his status for next week's home opener against the Denver Broncos.

With the Lions falling behind quickly this game, and the tailbacks mustering only 16 yards -- combined -- Detroit was forced to throw the ball 53 times. And with shoddy protection up front, Stafford absorbed several vicious hits.

He began the game nursing a right (throwing) elbow injury, which caused his hand to go numb during parts of the Week 1 loss in San Diego. Then he suffered what appeared to be a left arm injury on this game's first drive, and the injury was aggravated by a subsequent first-half hit. He eventually received medical attention for a bloodied thumb.

Then trainers also worked his chest area on the sideline, which proved to be the biggest concern after the game.

"Obviously getting hit out here as many times as he got hit, obviously that took a toll on him," coach Jim Caldwell said. "But he hung in there."

Stafford was in obvious pain after the game. His voice was lowered more than normal -- almost raspy -- as he struggled to speak at his regular press conference. He moved with great deliberation around the locker room. He had bandages covering his left wrist, left forearm and several toes.

He spent some time in the trainers' room, plus got X-rays in an adjoining room.

Asked if he could feel the pain during the game, or if adrenaline was carrying him, he replied simply: "Uh, yeah. Yep."

All told, Stafford absorbed eight quarterback hits and one sack, plus was hit twice while trying to get out of bounds. The last one, from Anthony Barr, drew a personal foul.

Stafford got in Barr's face after the play, clearly fired up. He came back to lead a touchdown drive, too, hitting Eric Ebron from 12 yards out. He finished 32-of-53 passing for 285 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The Lions rarely asked Stafford to throw deep, despite having Calvin Johnson, but Caldwell said that was not related to the injuries.

"If he was limited by his right arm, we wouldn't have played him," Caldwell said.

Now the concern has to be about his health heading into next week's home opener extravaganza, on Monday night against the Broncos.

On a positive note, 19 more days until we can watch the Red Wings.
