Giants' JPP Feels 90%, Ready To Strike Fear Into RaidersQuote
It's been a very slow start to the 2013 season for New York Giants star defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who currently has 19 total tackles and only one sack through the team's first eight games.
JPP's one lone sack was all the way back in the Giants Week 1 loss against the Dallas Cowboys as the defensive end is still on the road to recovery and getting back into the swing of things since having surgery in the summer to repair a herniated disc in his back.
When JPP first entered the league, he was viewed as the un-guardable defensive end who had to be double and triple-teamed by opposing offensive lineman, but this season, you've seen some of the league's starting left tackles not only handle JPP one-on-one, but flat-out dominate him into the ground and have kept him away from their quarterbacks.
But during the team's bye week and heading into their Week 10 matchup with the Oakland Raiders this Sunday at MetLife Stadium, JPP told Steve Serby of the New York Post on Wednesday how he's feeling much better and is getting back to where he feels like his old self, which could be trouble for the Oakland quarterbacks and in particular, Terrelle Pryor.
“I’m ready, bro. I’m ready to turn this corner,” Pierre-Paul said Wednesday as the Giants prepared for Sunday’s home game against the Raiders. ”For the past three years I’ve been rushing the passer, you could see fear in quarterback’s eyes, you see fear in the tackle’s eyes. They respect me. … They know when they hit the field, that they got a problem. And this week, they’re gonna have a problem. They better bring their ‘A’ game. That’s all I can tell you, man.”
Not only did JPP feel that he was completely over the back surgery and recovery needed to get over the herniated disc; something that started to bother him last season and again, limited his production, but felt that the practice on Wednesday was one of his best all year and evaluated his back at being 90 percent healthy.
“I say I feel like 90 percent now,” Pierre-Paul said. “For those eight games I’ve been thinking how my back is gonna take this, how I was gonna feel. I can’t think about being hurt. I didn’t get hurt by thinking. So I gotta go out and play this game like I know I can. … I went out there today and I’m turning the edge pretty good now. I’m getting there. For eight games, I’ve been thinking too much and didn’t want to get hurt. Can’t think about if I turn the corner too quick if my back’s gonna give out on me. I think this is the best practice I had by far,” he said. ”I feel great. I went out there and had a great practice, and I’m starting to build that confidence back in myself. I’m anxious,” he said. “I wish the game was right now.”
After getting five sacks in his rookie season in 2010 and then 16.5 sacks in 2011, JPP was held to just 6.5 sacks last year and some people around football thought that the league had figured out the pass-rusher, but as it turns out, he was really playing through pain with the back injury and never told anyone and could only deal with the pain for only so long before getting his back fixed.
If JPP's back really is feeling better and he is back to feeling like his old self, then Pryor could be in for a long day on Sunday with a rejuvenated defense that has not allowed an offensive touchdown in its last 10 quarters played.
