i think most people hate patriots fans because we know they didnt exist 22 years ago. i live in ct and worked in mass, it was all cowboys/packers/giants/jets. then, suddenly, the 90's end and this little known michigan qb comes along and EVERYBODY is a patriots fan. weird kid that always wore a cowboys hat, patriots fan. friends mom who never watched football, patriots fan. drunk guy who owns mulitple cheese hats, patriots fan.
like 99% of nfl fans were rooting for brady to win his first. the problem is alot of those people never went back t their actual favorite team. they just stayed with the winning team.
Washington was just as bad. The Seahawks were never talked about here, or if they were, it was only in a negative way. Even when they finally had a run in the mid 2000s, outside a handful of outraged fans at the officiating in the SB, it was mostly pessimism or a "I knew they'd blow it" mentality.
Then the legion of boom, Wilson, Petey, etc.., and even in smallish town a like Tumwater its 1/4 people or more wearing gear on game day, every store is selling merch, they've got flags out, they start allowing seahawks gear in state offices on Fridays etc... All from a single win.
This is how it always works lol. The same people are going to be there year in and year out, but you get a massive influx whenever a team actually wins the whole thing. Things usually go back to normal after a few years, but what happened with NE was exceedingly rare, hence the lasting hate, and this delusion that its a different level of insufferable from any other franchise.
