Seems like the consensus around the Jets is that our first pick is going to be one of: Watkins/Lee/Evans/Ebron/Amaro

FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Geno Smith is finding himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons this month.

A source told the Daily News the Jets quarterback was booted off a Virgin America flight out of Los Angeles International Airport on Friday because he refused to get off his cellphone after being asked to do so three times by the flight crew.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m., the source said, when LAX Port Authority cops got a call to respond to an incident at Gate 37A. A Virgin America supervisor had already escorted Smith from the gate and both were at the airline’s kiosk because the flight had already departed.

The supervisor told the cops that the captain hadn’t wanted Smith on the flight.

“The flight crew asked him to get off his cellphone three times, but he didn’t comply,” the source said, and Virgin America didn’t allow him to reschedule.

“He (Smith) said he didn’t know why he was kicked off the flight,” the source said. “He said it was because he was black. Virgin Airlines refused to re-book him because he was being disruptive.”

TMZ filmed Smith at the airport denying any incident. When asked about it, Smith said, “Don’t believe that.” The TMZ reporter mentioned that the QB seemed calm, to which Smith responded, “Always.”

Deadspin first reported Friday that Smith was apparently escorted off a Virgin America flight and out of LAX by police after what appeared to be a verbal altercation.

This account differs sharply from that of a source close to Smith, who told The News that a flight attendant had ripped off the quarterback’s headphones, initiating the conflict.

Smith decided to get off the plane of his own accord, the source said. Smith was on a flight to Fort Lauderdale, not Las Vegas as Deadspin had reported, the source added.

When asked if there was an incident involving Smith, Sergeant Belinda Nettles with Los Angeles World Airports police said, “I can’t confirm any names or anything because there were no arrests made. But we did respond to a call, and the subject involved was questioned and released.

“We responded to an incident. When we arrived, the person was already off the aircraft,” Nettles added.

A Jets spokesperson said, “We are aware of the report and are researching the facts. We will have no comment at this time.”

Numerous accounts rose up on the Internet and Twitter in the immediate aftermath. Twitter user @markyOso Tweeted his version of events, saying, “I’m at LAX and just saw a Smith fiasco yelling at Virgin America workers. Escorted by cops LOL.”

Another source told Deadspin,“We were waiting for our flight at LAX to Vegas and were put on standby on Virgin American just like Geno. We were told to get seat assignment at 2:40. Apparently Geno was not on board with that. My friend walked over to discuss seat assignment and Geno was saying to airline ticket agents, ‘F--- that, this is bull----t. Why the f--- do I have to wait until 2:40.’ He would not let it go. He continued to curse and be loud for about five minutes. Police were called. They talked for a few minutes and then three officers escorted him out of the terminal.”

It’s already been a rough offseason for the Jets’ signal-caller. Earlier this month, Atlanta nursing student Jackie Presley claimed she had had an affair with Smith and posted a picture of what she claimed was the quarterback’s penis.

Smith’s recent off-the-field trouble comes as a surprise after the quarterback seemed very professional during his rookie season.

Before the draft, Smith’s character was questioned, most notably by the publication Pro Football Weekly. The rookie quarterback, who had been viewed as a potential top-10 pick, fell to the Jets at No. 39. At least in front of the media, Smith made doubts about him seem unfounded, as the QB was nearly always cool and collected throughout the year despite a horrific cold streak in the middle of the season. Smith led the Jets to an 8-8 record despite committing 25 turnovers compared to throwing just 12 touchdown passes.

Smith was the second Jet to make headlines on Friday after a police report from November indicated that a witness believed tight end Kellen Winslow was masturbating in his car in East Hanover, N.J.

One of Rex Ryan's favorite players last season was Calvin Pace, who enjoyed perhaps his best season (career-high 10 sacks) after spending part of the offseason on the NFL's scrap heap (cut and re-signed by the New York Jets). He did it at the age of 33, admitting that getting fired for the first time was a humbling experience that steeled his motivation.

He also happened to be incredibly fortunate, in a right-place, right-time kind of way.

An in-depth breakdown of Pace's 10 sacks reveals that he caught some breaks and benefited greatly from excellent pass coverage. Consider: Six of the 10 sacks occurred when the quarterback held the ball for at least 4.0 seconds, unofficially -- i.e. a coverage sack. Another 1.5 sacks came when he was unblocked -- blown blocking assignments by the offense.

In other words, that 10-sack total is a bit deceiving.

Pace was the first to admit during the season that he benefited from being surrounded by young, talented pass-rushers such as Muhammad Wilkerson, Quinton Coples and Sheldon Richardson. Instead of being the No. 1 or No. 2 pass-rusher, drawing extra attention from the opponent, Pace thrived in a complementary role. Indeed, six of his 10 sacks happened while the quarterback -- under pressure -- was stepping up and/or attempting the escape the pocket, according to a video breakdown of the plays. Pace became the clean-up guy, the finisher.

To his credit, Pace's sacks came at opportune times. In fact, eight of the 10 sacks came in Jets' territory, including two in the red zone.

Now Pace is due to become an unrestricted free agent March 11, and you can bet he's looking for more than the $1 million he made last season on a one-year contract. No doubt, he has earned more leverage, but the Jets have to be careful not to overpay for a player who will be 34 at midseason. Pace said at the end of the season that he wants to return, especially with Ryan staying on, but every man has a price. If Pace prices himself out of the job, the Jets will turn elsewhere.

Either way, the Jets need to look for a strongside linebacker in the draft. It doesn't have to be in the first or second round, but they could use another edge player to put opposite Coples, the rush linebacker in Ryan's 3-4 base scheme. There isn't an heir apparent on the roster, so it would behoove them to use the draft to find their 2015 starter.

So, we put the franchise tag on Nick Folk.
The Jets have placed their franchise tag on Nick Folk after the kicker had a career year in 2013. Folk was set to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins on March 11, but the Jets have locked him down for at least next season.

Folk will make $3.556 million in 2014, according to NFL.com — a significant increase over the $780,000 he made last season. Folk has been with the Jets since 2010 on a series of one-year contracts. Though the franchise tag is also a one-year deal, Folk and the Jets could still work out a long-term pact even after the franchise designation. The Jets are significantly stepping up their commitment to Folk, who had to fight off Billy Cundiff for the job in training camp last year.

In December, Folk expressed a desire for a multiyear deal with Gang Green. “I’ve done my part,” he said at the time.

Folk is the first player the Jets have tagged since David Harris in 2011, and Gang Green signed the linebacker to a long-term deal later that offseason. No kickers got franchise tags last season, though five did in 2012.

Folk, 29, converted 33 of 36 field-goal attempts last season, including game-winners against Tampa Bay, Atlanta and New England. A Pro Bowl candidate, Folk did not make the game in Hawaii. Folk is a career 80.3% field-goal kicker in the regular season. Rex Ryan lauded him all season, dubbing him “Folk Hero.”

By placing the tag on Folk, the Jets fill one of several holes they must address this offseason. Gang Green can now shift its focus toward attempting to re-sign right tackle Austin Howard, its most important pending free agent, and finding pass catchers, the greatest area of need.
