Yeah youre actually the third person to mention that to me. One said no more than once a year and an older colleague said 3 to 4 years. I got my first negotiation experience too, successfully countered their offer to get a little more out of em. Add that to my first professional interview (i got my current job from a phone interview) and im feeling better than ever about myself as a GIS professional. This is a big stepping stone to the top at rhe very least and a considerable raise

big companies have pretty strict % lifts for internal promotions so in order to jump outside of your payband you've basically got to jump to another company and then you can jump back again
i know a girl who worked here at say level 1, she left to go to a new company to go to level 2, came back here to get to level 2 and then got promoted here after that
so basically she got 3 significant pay increases to jump only 2 levels
