Tuck: DT competition 'very heated'

Quote
Justin Tuck has been very impressed with the play of Johnathan Hankins and Damontre Moore.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Giants loaded up at defensive tackle in an effort to stop the run.

Justin Tuck has seen the talent at that position in camp and the defensive captain has been impressed. But he also knows somebody good is going to get cut because of a numbers game.

"I see a lot of guys making our defensive coaches and coaching staff’s job very difficult," Tuck said. "The competition is very heated in that group. I really don’t see anybody out of that group that won’t have a job somewhere. Obviously we can’t keep them all. Everybody in our defensive line room, I think, has an opportunity to play somewhere this year. And that’s rare."

The starting defensive tackles have been Linval Joseph and Cullen Jenkins, who also has seen snaps at defensive end. Shaun Rogers is on the second team but has seen snaps with the first team when Jenkins moved to defensive end to fill in for Tuck, who missed the past two practices due to a tight back.

Second-round pick Johnathan Hankins has impressed while working with the second team and Marvin Austin and Mike Patterson have been working with the third team. Frank Okam is also in the mix and Markus Kuhn has been on the PUP list. Will the Giants be able to keep five or six defensive tackles on the final roster?

"Honestly, there’s been times this season, times in my career, you look at guys we’ve got in that [defensive line] room and you just say, he shouldn’t be here," Tuck said. "But out of all the guys we have in that defensive line room, I don’t see anybody that doesn’t have the potential, [doesn't] have the talent, to make a team somewhere, if it’s not here."

Tuck has been very impressed with Hankins, not to mention fellow rookie defensive end Damontre Moore, thus far.

"The two rookies we have on our D-line have stood out," Tuck said. "Moore has been explosive, he is still very raw. But you can see the talent and the potential there. Hank is quiet and he is more polished. You can tell he’s obviously had a great coach and played big-time football [at Ohio State]. Both of them have but Hank seems to be a little more polished right now. But the potential of Moore is off the radar right now."

Tuck also likes the D's potential and the motivation he has seen since the start of camp.

"We have a certain aura around us as a team," Tuck said. "A lot of guys are very conscious about what we want our identity to be and I think a lot of guys have verbalized that and continue to verbalize that. You don’t see a lot of wasted reps, a lot of wasted time either and I think that is really going to help this football team because the sense of urgency to be a good defensive team is now.

"It doesn’t wait until Dallas," Tuck said of the season opener. "It started a week ago."

Tight end Adrien Robinson may be hidden gem for Giants

Quote
Adrien Robinson's combination of size and speed is impressing the Giants.

EAST RUTHERFORD – Adrien Robinson was lost.

This was the third day of his rookie training camp last summer and nothing was going right. He was a step slow, missing simple assignments, and worst of all, dropping passes even though he was wide open in the middle of the field against ghost defenses.

With his confidence waning just 72 hours in, Robinson stayed after practice with tight ends coach Mike Pope, and a catching drill between the two lasted for about 30 minutes.

Even more so than bettering his hands, Pope went to work on his psyche.

"It's like I didn't take Algebra I and I was stuck in Algebra II," Robinson said. "That's kind of how it was for a while. I felt pressure because I was brought in as a fourth-round draft pick. I wanted to prove that they made a good decision, and things weren't working out for me.

"It was a little frustrating, but Coach Pope told me [to] take as much as I could from the experience. Watch Martellus [Bennett]. Watch Bear [Pascoe]. Learn."

And wouldn't you know it – Robinson started to find his game soon after.

He got more comfortable as the season progressed, and despite being inactive for all but two games, the foundation to a promising future was established.

A year later, the 6-foot-4, 264-pound tight end is displaying the raw potential that led general manager Jerry Reese to call him on draft day the Jason Pierre-Paul of tight ends.

Robinson faced a nearly impossible situation last year, forced to miss most of the spring team activities – veteran minicamp included – because of class obligations at the University of Cincinnati. By the time he reported to training camp with the rest of the Giants, it was as if he was ready for the first day of school and everyone else was taking midterms.

"I felt like I caught up some and I was doing some things better as the season went on, but never completely," said Robinson, who turns 25 next month. "We'd get to a certain week and I'd be like, 'Wow, I don't remember doing that in camp,' mainly because we didn't do it since camp. Looking back, that's probably the biggest reason why I didn't play much last year.

"I never really knew the offense and then the season was over."

Robinson is making up for lost time on the practice field, wowing with his combination of size and speed as a downfield target while also showing some physicality as a blocker.

He has mostly participated with the second-team offense, but over the past few days his reps with the first-team – and quarterback Eli Manning – have increased.

With Bennett gone via free agency to the Bears, the Giants brought Brandon Myers and his 79 catches from last season with Oakland into the fold.

Myers has worked with Robinson on his releases as a receiver.

Robinson answered any questions Myers had early on with the playbook – something that would have been unthinkable a year ago.

"The quarterback is starting to find him. He is hard to miss – he is the tallest tree in the forest out there," Pope said this spring.

"So he is a good target."

Robinson never caught more than 12 passes in any season in college and did not record a reception in games against Dallas and Cleveland as a rookie.

That seems on the verge of changing drastically this season, which begins Saturday night with the Giants' preseason opener against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

"As a player," Robinson said, "right now it's like night and day for me."

Because of that, the Giants believe they've found a hidden gem.

Players To Watch vs. Steelers

http://www.giants.com/news-and-blogs...3-b8272dfc0825

"LB Mark Herzlich –

After 11 practices, Herzlich is still holding the spot in which he entered camp: starting middle linebacker. That alone tells you about his performance heading into his third season after coming in undrafted in 2011. Herzlich has shown command of the defense, and along with the rest of the first teamers, is expected to play most of the opening quarter against Pittsburgh. We’ll see how his progress translates to live reps.

WR Rueben Randle

– Head coach Tom Coughlin said Eli Manning will go 12 or 15 snaps, and don’t be surprised if he uses one to try to hit a home run with Randle. The second-year wide receiver has picked up where he left off last season and is ready to break out. In the last game he played, he put together a two-touchdown performance in the 2012 regular season finale against Philadelphia. He has a knack for winning jump balls. I bet we’ll see one Saturday night.

CB Prince Amukamara –

Other than Randle, Amukamara has improved his stock the most at Giants training camp. Certainly that’s true on the defensive side. There’s a different demeanor to him out on the field. He’s physical and playing with a great deal of confidence. Day after day, he keeps deflecting passes or grabbing interceptions. That’s not to say he hasn’t let anything by him, but when he does, he comes right back and responds. He’s heading into the preseason slate with momentum, which is all you can ask from a player during camp.

TE Brandon Myers

– Over the last few years, there has been a revolving door in the tight ends room at 1925 Giants Drive. But the team makes it work. From Kevin Boss to Jake Ballard to Martellus Bennett, Myers is the next in line to fill the role. He’s coming off a 79-catch season in Oakland after never having more than 16 in his first three seasons in the NFL. So far, he has proven to be a reliable target for Manning.

K Josh Brown

– Brown has big shoes to fill with the departure of Lawrence Tynes and his storied Giants career. Brown has looked strong so far at camp, but we haven’t seen a whole lot of live field goal attempts. He seems to be fitting in well with punter/holder Steve Weatherford and snapper Zak DeOssie, which will go a long way in their timing and chemistry on the field. There’s no backup kicker this year, so Brown will get all of the work.

Also keep an eye on:
-

CB Jayron Hosley

– In a similar boat with Amukamara – but a year behind in his career – Hosley has made some plays in training camp and is everywhere on special teams.

DT Johnathan Hankins

– Defensive tackle has been one of the deepest competitions at Giants camp, and Hankins isn’t only showing he belongs in the NFL but that he can contribute.

QB Ryan Nassib

– Anytime a quarterback is drafted, people want to watch. We don’t know yet if he’ll be playing third behind Manning and David Carr. However, Coughlin said he thinks he will try to work all four quarterbacks into the game (Curtis Painter being the other).

LB Etienne Sabino

– Earlier this week, linebackers coach Jim Herrmann said he is excited to get the undrafted rookie out of Ohio State into the game and see what he can do.

OL Brandon Mosley

– Listed as a tackle, Mosley is likely to start at right guard for the Giants, where he has worked with the first team this week. Chris Snee, the fixture at the position, was activated off the physically unable to perform list this week but is not yet ready for a live game."
