Giants Roster Breakdown #83: Justin Tuck

Quote
Justin Tuck is next as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the New York Giants' roster as training camp draws near.

As we continue to break down the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp in a few short days we have arrived at a player we have spent a good deal of the off-season discussing already. That would be defensive end Justin Tuck. I doubt we can cover much new ground here, but let's discuss the Giants' defensive captain, anyway.

2012 Season In Review

Tuck had just four sacks and 45 tackles in his second straight sub-par season, looking like a shell of the player who had 11.5 sacks in 2010. Worse, for the second straight season, it was often painfully obvious watching Tuck -- even on TV -- that his head and heart weren't always fully committed. He certainly wasn't "All In" all the time.

2013 Outlook

It is impossible to know what to expect from Tuck production-wise. His head seems to be in a better place and he seems committed to playing the best football he can play -- something that might not have always been the case the past couple of seasons. He is also healthy, at least for now.

At 30, Tuck should be able to still produce at an elite level. I guess we will all find out together if he still can. If he doesn't, it's fair to wonder if this will be his final season with the Giants.

Tuck is going to shut all his critics up this year... he's been working hard and looks JACKED beyond belief... hopefully he can stay healthy and return to dominance

Giants Roster Breakdown #84: Alonzo Tweedy

Quote
Alonzo Tweedy is next on our list as we continue to break down the New York Giants' 90-man roster.

Alonzo Tweedy, an undrafted free agent hybrid linebacker/safety is one of the more intriguing players on the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp. Let's look at Tweedy as we continue our player-by-player breakdown.

2012 Season In Review

Tweedy started only three games on defense for the Hokies, playing the third safety role in the box in place of a true linebacker. What he does best is cover kicks. Tweedy played 220 snaps on special teams as a senior at Virginia Tech and only 175 snaps on defense.

2013 Outlook

Tweedy is listed as a linebacker, yet is 6-foot-2, 193 pounds. If he has a position it really is the third safety, playing the box in the place of a true linebacker. If Tweedy has any chance of making the Giants he will have to shine in coverage during the four preseason games. His quest to make the roster will be complicated by the Giants likely need to keep three quarterbacks -- a spot where they usually only keep two -- and by the fact that long snapper Zak DeOssie plays no defensive position. It will be difficult to add another specialist. Perhaps he can find his way to the practice squad.

Giants Roster Breakdown #85: Steve Weatherford

Quote
Punter Steve Weatherford is next as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the Giants' 90-man roster.

As we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp we have arrived at one of the most popular Giants, punter Steve Weatherford.

2012 Season In Review

Weatherford continues to get better and better, justifying the five-year, $12.75-million contract the Giants gave him prior to the 2012 season by having the best season of his career and by continuing to be a terrific representative for the franchise. Weatherford averaged 47.5 yards per punt in 2012, nearly two full yards better than his previous career best, 45.7 yards per punt, in 2011. Weatherford had a 39.4 yard net average.

2013 Outlook

I don't know if it's possible for Weatherford to continue gaining distance on his punts. At some point he has to reach his ceiling. Weatherford, though, did drop off in one area in 2012 -- getting only five punts fair-caught after 15 in 2011. Maybe part of that is increased distance, but it is something to watch. Regardless, expect another quality season from the Giants' punter.

Giants Roster Breakdown #86: Corey Webster

Quote
Corey Webster is in the spotlight as we continue breaking down the New York Giants' 90-man roster.

Corey Webster has been a favorite whipping boy for New York Giants' fans upset -- with good reason -- by the way the team's defense played in 2012. That is, not defending much of anything at all and finishing 31st in the league. Webster is up next as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

2012 Season In Review

Webster had a horrible season, his worst since a frigid January night when he forever became a Giants hero with a game-changing overtime interception of Brett Favre in the Conference Championship Game. Webster was at the mercy of opposing offenses much of the season, and only two corners in the league who played at least 75 percent of their team's snaps had a passer rating against worse than Webster's 106.6. Webster surrendered 330 yards after the catch, fifth-worst in the league.

2013 Outlook

Webster took a huge pay cut to stay with the Giants, who would have been justified in simply cutting the eight-year veteran. Can Webster, 31, bounce back enough to justify the Giants' faith in him? Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said during mini-camp that Webster is "coming back with a purpose."

His purpose needs to be to play at least representative, adequate NFL football -- which he did not do in 2012. The Giants did not draft another corner, bringing in veterans Aaron Ross and Trumaine McBride, and choosing to see if Terrell Thomas can actually come back this time around. Thus, some improvement from Webster is a must.

LOL I LOVE that picture...... C-Web is going to be healthy this season and regain his old form and play like the shut down corner he's been since the '07 playoffs.

Giants Roster Breakdown #87: Jacquian Williams

Quote
Jacquian Williams is in the spotlight as we continue breaking down the Giants' 90-man roster.

Jacquian Williams is up next as we near the conclusion of our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp in just a few short days.

2012 Season In Review

When healthy Williams shows all the attributes to be a solid weak-side linebacker in the NFL. He has the speed and agility to hold his own covering tight ends, and to chase down running plays. At more than 240 pounds now he has the size and strength to hold up at the line of scrimmage. Williams played 10 games for the Giants last season as he was limited by a PCL injury. He compiled 30 tackles, a sack, two passes defensed and an overall Pro Football Focus rating of -1.5 in 299 snaps.

2013 Outlook

Williams and Spencer Paysinger are the leading candidates to replace Michael Boley, who was cut during the offseason.Williams, coming back cautiously from his knee injury, has lost ground to Paysinger -- who ran with the first unit during mini-camp. Williams figures to get a fair share of opportunities, whether he starts or not, as part of a linebacking corps searching for the right combination of play-makers.

Boley is gone that means Jacquian will be the starter and show everyone that he's the STUD he showed he was his rookie season. He just has to stay on the field.

Giants Roster Breakdown #88: David Wilson

Quote
David Wilson is the final player to be looked at in our breakdown of the Giants' 90-man roster.

We have reached the final player in our breakdown of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp later this week at the Timex Performance Center. That would be running back David Wilson, whose performance in 2013 will go a long way toward determining the Giants' success or failure.

2012 Season In Review

Wilson made a huge splash returning kickoffs, averaging 26.9 yards over 57 returns to give the Giants the most dangerous return man they have had in several seasons. He didn't make that kind of splash as a running back, however. An early-season fumble and concerns over his blocking and knowledge of his assignments in general limited his playing time until later in the season. He finished with 358 yards rushing on 71 carries (5.0 yards per carry) and four touchdowns/backflips.

2013 Outlook

Wilson is expected to take over as the primary running back with Ahmad Bradshaw having been cut and eventually signing with the Indianapolis Colts. Wilson's ability to protect Eli Manning will likely determine just how much he is on the field. "He is still not 100 percent," offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said during mini-camp. "He still makes mistakes but there has certainly been some significant, some significant growth."

Numberfire projects Wilson for a 797-yard season. If the over/under for Wilson's yardage was set at 800. which would you take. The other question with Wilson is how much the Giants will allow him to return kickoffs. It's something he wants to do and special teams coordinator Tom Quinn wants him to do, but Gilbride and head coach Tom Coughlin might disagree.

In a recent poll, 45 percent of voters from the Big Blue View community said they expect Wilson to return kickoffs part-time in 2013.

yeah, he's good at return but return plays always scare me especially when its Wilson, I don't want him to get hurt. but good to know he'll play return part time not full time.

he's young, so much potential.

Eli Thinks Playing Another 10 Years is a Possibility

Quote
Manning's view of his own situation is similarly upbeat. He told me he feels as good as he's ever felt and sees every reason to keep playing in the foreseeable future. And that future extends beyond what he has ever said before.

"I've never put an exact number on it, but I do know I don't see the end anywhere too near, so I'm going to play as long as I feel I can play at a high level and my body can hang under me,'' he said. "I do feel healthy and strong and energized about what I'm doing, and I'm fortunate. Hopefully it's for another five-plus years. I put that as somewhat of a goal.''

And if he makes it into the "plus'' part of five-plus? Could we possibly see Manning play for another 10 years?

"Yeah, I think, yeah,'' he said. "I love what I'm doing. I love training camp. I love the working-out aspects. I love the practice. I love winning games. Those are exciting things. So as of right now, I don't ever see that getting old or getting tired.''
