Giants Roster Breakdown #78: Cooper Taylor

Quote
Cooper Taylor is next on the list as we continue breaking down the New York Giants' 90-man roster.

Cooper Taylor overcame a serious heart condition that required surgery to wind up being selected in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.

"We think we got a hidden gem there," said Giants Director of College Scouting Marc Ross. "This guy is big, fast, smart, plays the game the right way. He does a lot of things for Richmond. They line him up at multiple positions. You’ll see him in the box; you’ll see him back deep. He covers the slot. Productive there. He transferred from Georgia Tech, but we think this guy has got a lot of upside. Sent our (secondary-safeties) coach (David) Merritt down there to work him out -- a private workout -- and he was really impressed by him. We had him in for a visit. The kid is really smart. Loves football, so we think he has a ton of upside."

Let's take a closer look at Taylor, who has extraordinary size at 6-foot-4 3/4, 228 pounds -- as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the Giants' 90-man training camp roster.

2012 Season In Review

Taylor was an FCS All-American while playing for the University of Richmond last season.

2013 Outlook

When he was drafted much was made of the possibility that Taylor could play the hybrid linebacker/safety role or third safety for the Giants. Taylor is behind Antrel Rolle, Stevie Brown, Ryan Mundy and Will Hill on the depth chart, and entering camp seems likely to be fighting Tyler Sash for a roster spot. It seems most likely that his primary impact, should he make the team, will come on special teams during 2013.

Giants Roster Breakdown #79: Ryan Torain

Quote
Ryan Torain is competing for a job with the Giants as a reserve running back.

Running back Ryan Torain is up next as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp in about a week.

2012 Season In Review

The Giants signed Torain as a free agent in late November when injuries to Da'Rel Scott and Andre Brown, and the always banged-up status of Ahmad Bradshaw, left their running back group depleted. The 6-foot, 220-pound four-year veteran was only active in two games, however, and never touched the ball for the Giants.

2013 Outlook

Torain appears to be in competition with Scott and rookie seventh-round pick Michael Cox for a roster spot. Complicating matters for the 2008 fifth-round pick by the Denver Broncos is the fact that he missed much of the off-season work with a hamstring injury. Torain, 26, does have a 4.2 yards per carry average over 238 career rushing attempts so he might have a chance to make the roster if he can get on the field in training camp. If he can't he might find himself cut before he ever gets an opportunity.

Giants Roster Breakdown #80: Terrell Thomas

Quote
Terrell Thomas, trying to come back from a third ACL surgery, is next as we continue breaking down the New York Giants' 90-man roster.

As we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp at the Timex Performance Center in just a few days we have arrived at a player every Giants fan should be rooting for -- Terrell Thomas. The veteran cornerback is trying to come back from his third torn ACL and second in two seasons, and has not played a down since 2010.

2012 Season In Review

Thomas spent yet another season in rehab after slipping on the UAlbany grass early in training camp, tearing his ACL yet again.

2013 Outlook

What to expect from Thomas is completely unknown. Secondary coach Peter Giunta says the Giants will try to do what the team did with wide receiver Domenik Hixon a season ago when he was coming back from his own second straight ACL tear. That is "try to bring him along slowly. Give him a certain number of reps each practice to get him from the practices to the first preseason game. We’re going to try and manage him."

Thomas himself said recently he "never thought I wouldn't make it back." He also admitted, however, that he knows this is likely his last chance as an NFL player.

Before figuring out what kind of role Thomas might be able to play the Giants need to see him on the field. They need to see if he can practice every day, and what kind of athleticism and ability the 28-year-old has left. Can he play corner on the outside? Does he have the agility to line up in the slot and handle smaller, quicker receivers? Would he be better off at safety, where he would have fewer one-on-one coverage responsibilities? How much can he play, regardless of position?

None of this can be determined until we see Thomas in action during training camp and in preseason games.

Giants Roster Breakdown #81: Adrian Tracy

Quote
Adrian Tracy is next as we continue breaking down the New York Giants' 90-man roster.

The 2013 NFL season provides Adrian Tracy with the first real chance he has had to earn consistent playing time since the New York Giants drafted him out of William & Mary in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Let's look at Tracy as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the Giants' 90-man roster heading into training camp.

2012 Season In Review

Tracy played a limited role on the Giants defense. He played 13 snaps against the San Francisco 49ers and 26 against the Baltimore Ravens, and was rarely seen on the field the rest of the season. He has settled in as a defensive end after the Giants experimented some with him as an outside linebacker earlier in his career.

2013 Outlook

Tracy would appear to be the fourth defensive end on the depth chart, and quite possibly the third if Jason Pierre-Paul is not ready to start the season following back surgery.

Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said during mini-camp that Tracy, 26, is "playing with a lot more confidence, playing with a lot more purpose" than he has in the past.

One reason there are defensive end snaps available for Tracy or any of the Giants other young defensive ends is that Osi Umenyiora is now a member of the Atlanta Falcons. At times Tracy has been called "young Osi."

"Osi did a nice job in training him. He was kind of his mentor, so to speak, and he has flashes of Osi in him at times," Fewell said.

The question with Tracy likely won't be whether or not he can rush the passer. He is listed at 245 pounds, though he is likely bigger than that at this point in his career, and the biggest issue will be whether or not Tracy can hold up against the run from a defensive end spot.

We will likely find out just what Tracy can bring to the table this season. He figures to be on the field for far more than the 70 defensive snaps he played a season ago.

Giants Roster Breakdown #82: Justin Trattou

Quote
Justin Trattou is next as we continue to break down the Giants' 90-man roster.

Justin Trattou is one of several young defensive ends vying for roster spots with the 2013 New York Giants. Let's look closely at Trattou as we continue our player-by-player breakdowns of the Giants' 90-man roster heading into training camp.

2012 Season In Review

After a 2011 season that saw Trattou, an undrafted free agent from Florida, see brief action in six games he spent the 2012 season on injured reserve with a foot injury suffered during training camp.

2013 Outlook

Before Damontre Moore was drafted, before Adrian Tracy and Adewale Ojomo became the young defensive ends to watch, before Matt Broha spent 2012 on the practice squad Trattou, 24, was the young defensive end on the rise for the Giants. Can the 6-foot-4, 255-pound third-year player reclaim his status at the front of the line of young Giants' defensive ends? It won't be easy, but don't count Trattou out of the mix.
