Giants Roster Breakdown #70: Shaun Rogers

Quote
Shaun Rogers is next as we continue breaking down the Giants' 90-man roster.

Shaun Rogers is a veteran defensive tackle competing for one of the spots behind starters Linval Joseph and Cullen Jenkins in the New York Giants defensive tackle rotation. Let's look at Rogers as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

2012 Season In Review

The Giants signed the three-time Pro Bowler prior to the season hoping that, even though Rogers is near the end of an excellent career, he could still help them against the run as a rotational defensive tackle. Unfortunately, a blood clot in his left calf landed the 6-foot-4, 350-pound Rogers on injured reserve before the season began.

2013 Outlook

It is tough to know what to expect from Rogers, 34. The Giants brought him back for another opportunity, but Rogers has not really been an impact player since 2009. The Giants are flush with defensive tackles, including second-round pick Johnathan Hankins, and Rogers is going to have to show that he is still a valuable run-stopper in order to make the 53-man roster.

Giants Roster Breakdown #71: Antrel Rolle

Quote
Antrel Rolle is next as we continue to break down the Giants' 90-man roster.

Is Antrel Rolle a star? A good player? An overpaid bum? Everybody seems to have an opinion when it comes to the New York Giants talkative safety. Let's look at Rolle as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

2012 Season In Review

Rolle had 96 tackles, five passes defensed, two interceptions and a forced fumble last season. His overall Pro Football Focus grade was -2.9, including -5.8 against the pass.

It is foolish, though, to simply try to gauge Rolle by tackles, interceptions and PFF grades. What he means to the Giants' defense goes far beyond numbers. Justin Tuck might be the defensive captain, but it is Rolle who has emerged as the vocal and emotional leader of that group over the past two seasons. Rolle has also, without complaint, sacrificed his own statistical glory for the betterment of the Giants by spending considerable time playing slot corner due to injuries and ineffective play by others. It may not be what he does best, but he does it adequately, and his self-less willingness to put the team in front of himself is excellent leadership by example.

2013 Outlook

Once again the Giants will try to allow Rolle to play more of a true safety position, allowing him to use his ball skills and roam more freely in the secondary trying to make disruptive plays. Will things work out that way? Entering training camp the Giants appear to have better depth at cornerback, so possibly.
Here is what I really want to know, though? What is the outlook for Rolle's hair? Every training camp he arrives with some of outrageous hair style. What will it be this time?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stay healthy so Rolle can FINALLY play his natural position...

Giants Roster Breakdown #72: Aaron Ross

Quote
Aaron Ross is next as we continue our breakdown of the New York Giants' 90-man roster.

Aaron Ross is back with the New York Giants after a season of self-imposed exile with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Let's look at what Ross might bring to the 2013 Giants as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

2012 Season In Review

Ross bolted the Giants after six seasons in favor of the Jaguars for a fat three-year, $15.3 million contract. Ross made some money, but the Jaguars were awful, going 2-14. He had 46 tackles, no interceptions and a -6.2 Pro Football Focus score in 14 games. He was cut by the Jaguars after a season he called "a nice paid vacation to Florida.'

2013 Outlook

The Giants quickly brought Ross, 30, back into the fold. He agreed to a one-year deal for $780,000 -- a far cry from the big money he signed for in Jacksonville.

Ross worked as the team's No. 1 slot corner in OTAs and mini-camp, and will compete with second-year man Jayron Hosley and perennial comeback kid Terrell Thomas for that role. He will also provide valuable depth on the outside in the event of injuries or poor play, and his familiarity with the Giants' defensive scheme is also a plus as the Giants work to eliminate communication breakdowns in the secondary.

Giants Roster Breakdown #73: Etienne Sabino

Quote
Undrafted free agent linebacker Etienne Sabino is next as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the Giants' roster heading into training camp.

Linebacker Etienne Sabino came to the New York Giants as an undrafted free agents after starting the past two seasons for Ohio State. Let's look at Sabino as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp later this month.

2012 Season In Review

Sabino played only eight games in 2012 due to a broken fibular. He recorded 45 tackles, 3.5 for loss, two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble. In 2011, Sabino had 62 tackles, 6.5 for loss, and two sacks.

2013 Outlook

Can Sabino make it with the linebacker-needy Giants? Here is what SB Nation's Ohio State web site, Land Grant Holy Land, said about Sabino in announcing his signing with New York:

Code
Sabino has the physical capability to be a solid NFL player. He is well-built at 6'2, 247 pounds, and is endowed with the athleticism to be used in a variety of roles, from rushing the passer to holding the edge. His speed and hustle are excellent.

Sabino does not appear to have very good natural instincts, however, and could have trouble getting on the field in any capacity but special teams as a result. Despite his potential, Sabino had a rather underwhelming career with the Buckeyes.

Land Grant Holy Land referred to the Giants' linebacking unit as "fairly crackable," which is true. The Giants have been searching under every rock for linebackers the past couple of of seasons, and if Sabino shows enough during training camp and preseason you have to believe there is a chance he at least makes the practice squad.

Giants Roster Breakdown #74: Tyler Sash

Quote
Safety Tyler Sash is next as we continue our breakdown of the Giants' 90-man roster.

Tyler Sash has yet to make a real impact for the Giants thus far in his two NFL seasons. Let's look at the third-year safety as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp in just a few days.

2012 Season In Review

Sash served a four-game suspension for Adderall use at the beginning of the season and played in only eight games, making eight tackles. Will Hill passed him on the safety depth chart and Sash played only 36 defensive snaps all season. He made two special teams tackles.

2013 Outlook

Sash will have to fight to remain on the roster. The emergence of Hill as a viable option last season, the drafting of Cooper Taylor in the fifth round and the free-agent signing of Ryan Mundy, as well as the fact that Aaron Ross and Terrell Thomas (if healthy) could play safety put the 2011 sixth-round pick in a battle for his roster spot. Sash seems unlikely to be more than a special teams player if he makes the team.

Giants Roster Breakdown #75: Da'Rel Scott

Quote
Da'Rel Scott is up as we continue our breakdown of the 90-man roster for the New York Giants.

Da'Rel Scott is fast. Real fast. We know that. Can he outrun his competition for a roster spot on the 2013 New York Giants? We don't know that. Scott is up next as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

2012 Season In Review

Scott played in only four games in 2012, carrying 6 times for 9 yards before being shelved by season-ending knee surgery. In two seasons he has 11 carries for 25 yards, 2 pass receptions for 13 yards and 14 kickoff returns (all in his rookie season) for an average of 24.4 yards per return.

2013 Outlook

Scott is likely in a fight with rookie seventh-round pick Michael Cox and, probably, veteran Ryan Torain for the final running back spot. Torain was injured during mini-camp so has not really had an opportunity to compete and could be released if he isn't healthy enough to take part in training camp.

As for Scott, he has blazing 4.34 40-yard dash speed at a solid 210 pounds but has yet to prove at the NFL level that he can do more than run fast. If he is going to make the squad again, and possibly contribute as a third option in the backfield, he needs to show he knows the playbook, can stay healthy and can make plays. If he makes the roster Scott has to be considered a kickoff return option if the Giants don't want David Wilson doing that full time.

Giants Roster Breakdown #76: Laron Scott

Quote
Laron Scott is next up as we continue breaking down the New York Giants' 90-man roster.

Laron Scott in a tough situation with the New York Giants as a young cornerback trying to make a squad filled with veterans who play his position. Let's take a closer look at Scott as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp just a few days from now.

2012 Season In Review

The Giants picked up Scott during the 2012 preseason and eventually signed him to their practice squad, where he remained for the entire season.

2013 Outlook

Scott is a 5-foot-9, 184-pound corner with kickoff return skills who faces an uphill climb to make the roster at a position stocked with veteran players. At Georgia Southern, Scott had 12 interceptions in three seasons and averaged 27.5 yards on 83 kickoff returns. He will have to make a splash during training camp or the preseason to make the 53-man roster, and might be able to do so as a kickoff returner if given the opportunity. A second straight trip to the practice squad is not out of the question.

Giants Roster Breakdown #77: Chris Snee

Quote
Chris Snee is next as we continue looking at the New York Giants' 90-man roster.

Chris Snee is commonly referred to as the New York Giants best offensive lineman. What is ahead for the veteran right guard? We look at Snee next as our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp continues.

2012 Season In Review

Snee played well for the Giants in 2012. He allowed only two quarterback sacks and his +12.8 Pro Football focus rating placed him 13th among 81 guards who played at least 25 percent of their team's snaps. The grade was Snee's best since a +31.6 in 2009, a year during which his dominant run-blocking earned him a +22.3 in that category

2013 Outlook

The four-time Pro Bowler and 2008 All-Pro underwent hip surgery in the offseason and expects to be ready once training camp begins. Snee may not be the dominating presence he was in 2008 and 2009, but he is still a very good player who anchors the middle of the Giants' line. Provided he can stay healthy Snee should continue to play well in 2013 and for a few seasons beyond that.

We need Snee healthy and to regain his All-Pro form
