I know the learning curve is steep, but once you figure it out, cutting the cable is just about as good.
I'm going through the process right now, building a htpc so I can do literally everything at the TV. You could do nearly everything with just your raspberry pi.
There is A LOT to learn about on the software end of it, but it'll be worth it in the long run. My TV, phone, and internet was about $300 a month. Now that I can get fast internet, it'll be around $70 for 200 Mbps and 1 tb/mo DL, and I will be able to get all of the same programming. I've gotta do the reading first though.
Look into Kodi. It's a highly customizable software that can get you most of what you want
