I thought he deserved to be a 2nd round pick, but getting him in the 3rd was obviously good value.
I thought he was comparable to Leonard Floyd as a prospect (both DPRs), but he went in round 1, too high imo. Floyd had better speed but less strength, and was more in the role of a traditional 3-4 rush LB since he could drop into coverage (played ILB some at UGA), but Ngakoue seemed more raw if he was to be a rush-LB and too small to play DE (not sure how he's used over there). Plus Floyd had the advantage of playing in the spotlight at Georgia, while Ngakoue wasted his time playing for a 3-win Terps team.
Like Diggs, I will both love and hate his success, since he's a Terp, but our FO passed on him when he was pretty obviously talented and fit a huge need. How they manage to overlook players in their own backyard irritates me... at least Judon looks legit.
Our GM Dave Caldwell said they originally looked to draft Ngakoue with our 2nd round pick, but when Myles Jack was still on the board they couldn't pass him up.
When Yannick was still there in the 3rd, it was an obvious no brainer.
They flew out our DC Todd Wash a week before the draft to hold a private workout with Ngakoue. He ran him through 4-3 DE drills, instead of 3-4 OLB drills, which most teams were looking at him as a 3-4 OLB.
Yannick is only used as our LEO DE. Our LEO DE only lines up on the weak side and typically only sees 1 vs 1 match ups.
The LEO DE uses the wide 9 principles and is set up to get our better athlete in a consistent 1 on 1 match up vs the OT. Ngakoue having that natural bend and being a natural pass rusher, our LEO DE position fits him perfectly.
The thing is, nobody expected him to have this kind of an impact, this early. There's a steep learning curve for DE/Pass Rushers in general and they usually struggle, especially in their rookie seasons. Yannick has definitely not been the norm though. Dude is a fucking baller.
With the coming out party of Yannickgod Ngakoue, they've played Fowler at the strong side DE quite a bit. More of your typical traditional 4-3 DE look (slightly undersized though), but Fowler is seeing the chips/double teams, while Ngakoue gets to see all of the 1v1. It's a very good thing to see, because the original plan was to have Yannick just be a DPR/3rd down/obvious pass rushing situation type of player his first year. That's clearly not the case now though.
