Giants Roster Breakdown #53: Brandon Mosley

Quote
Brandon Mosley is the subject of our latest New York Giants player breakdown.

Brandon Mosley had his rookie season aborted by an ankle injury that landed him on injured reserve. As we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp it is time to discuss Mosley's prospects for the upcoming season.

2012 Season In Review

The Giants drafted the 6-foot-5, 318-pound Mosley in the fourth round (131st overall) out of Auburn. He was converted tight end/defensive lineman and scouting reports looked at Mosley as a developmental project. Mosley struggled during training camp and, as we previously mentioned, spent his rookie season on IR.

2013 Outlook

Mosley was a right tackle at Auburn, but during OTAs and mini-camp he was lining up as the Giants' first-team left guard. Usual left guard Kevin Boothe has been playing center with David Baas recovering from injuries. As the Giants construct their offensive line -- including which players will be the backups at which positions -- Mosley will be an interesting player to watch. Last season's ankle injury means we really don't know what kind of player he can be, but the Giants have apparently moved him inside. If Boothe were forced to play center I can't see Mosley starting at left guard. Someone from the Justin Pugh/David Diehl/James Brewer triumvirate would likely take that spot depending on who is starting at right tackle. Mosley, though seems to have an inside track right now on a roster spot as a reserve. His likely competition is veteran backup Jim Cordle and 2013 seventh-round pick Eric Herman.

Giants Roster Breakdown #54: Jake Muasau

Quote
Linebacker Jake Muasau is in the spotlight as we continue breaking down the Giants roster.

Jake Muasau has taken an incredible journey toward his chance to make it in the NFL. The linebacker from tiny Georgia State is back for a second shot at making it with the New York Giants. We look at Muasau's chances today as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp later this month.

2012 Season In Review

The Giants signed Muasau as an undrafted free agent last season. He was impressive during training camp and the Giants began working him at middle linebacker, but a hamstring injury derailed Muasau's effort to go from rags to riches -- he was once homeless -- and the Giants released him.

2013 Outlook

Muasau showed the Giants enough in 2012 that, as they occasionally do with some young players, they brought him back for another look this season by signing him to a reserve/futures contract.

As was the case a season ago, Muasau has to be considered a longshot to make the Giants' roster. Considering, however, that the Giants have no truly established standout linebackers if Muasau can continue to impress the Giants the way he did a season ago -- and stay healthy this time around -- a spot, at least on the practice squad, could await.

Giants Roster Breakdown #55: Ryan Mundy

Quote
The Giants signed Ryan Mundy for depth at safety after losing Kenny Phillips in free agency.

Ryan Mundy has never been a star, or a full-time starter. The New York Giants signed him as a free agent to provide depth at safety after losing Kenny Phillips. We look at what Mundy brings to the table as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp later this month.

2012 Season In Review

Mundy played all 16 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, starting three games. He ended the year with 39 tackles and two passes defensed. Mundy earned a -3.5 grade from Pro Football Focus in 292 defensive snaps.

In his four years with the Steelers Mundy proved durable, never missing a game. He totaled 130 tackles, eight passes defensed and one interception. He was a sixth-round selection by Pittsburgh in 2008.

2013 Outlook

The Giants signed Mundy as a free agent after losing Kenny Phillips to the Philadelphia Eagles. At first glance that would seem like a loss for the Giants. Phillips, a 2008 first-round pick, started 41 games for the Giants over five seasons and was an excellent player -- arguably one of the league's better safeties -- when his knees permitted him to play.

The Giants have liked what they have seen from the 6-foot-1, 209-pound Mundy, however, and he has to be considered a leading candidate along with second-year man Will Hill for the role of third safety in the three-safety packages defensive coordinator Perry Fewell likes to employ.

Mundy is also an excellent special teams player who made 13 tackles in punt or kickoff coverage for Pittsburgh a season ago.

Mundy won't be a star, but he should be a valuable contributor for the Giants in 2013. A typical low-cost, useful signing by Giants general manager Jerry Reese.

Giants Roster Breakdown #56: Louis Murphy

Quote
The Giants have added speedy Louis Murphy to their stable of wide receivers.

The New York Giants brought wide receiver Louis Murphy in as a free agent with the hope he would bring big-play capability to an already high-scoring offense. Let's look at Murphy as we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp later this month.

2012 Season In Review

Murphy caught 25 passes for 336 yards (13.4 yards per catch) and one touchdown for the Carolina Panthers in his only season there after three years with the Oakland Raiders. His longest catch was for 55 yards.

2013 Outlook

The Giants hope Murphy will bring a vertical threat to their passing game, complementing the work of Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and developing second-year man Rueben Randle. Ofensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said during the offseason he hoped the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Murphy would "give us some explosiveness that maybe we haven’t had since we lost Mario Manningham."

With Cruz, Nicks, Randle and new tight end Brandon Myers giving quarterback Eli Manning plenty of options in the short to intermediate areas Murphy will get plenty of opportunities to stretch the field in four- and five-wide receiver sets. He also gives the Giants an experienced player, one with 115 career receptions, in the event of injuries.

SO EXCITED to see how this kid does with Eli.... his SPEED is insane. Him and Randle are burners and Nicks and Cruz aren't far behind but this kid can REALLY take the top off a defense.

Giants Roster Breakdown #57: Brandon Myers

Quote
The Giants brought in Brandon Myers to replace Martellus Bennett at tight end.

Fresh off a career-best 79-catch season with the Oakland Raiders Brandon Myers landed a free-agent contract with the New York Giants to replace Martellus Bennett, who bolted to the Chicago Bears for more money than the Giants were willing to fork over for a Black Unicorn. As we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp let's zero in on Myers.

2012 Season In Review

Myers had a breakout season in 2012, catching the aforementioned 79 passes after totaling only 32 catches in his first three seasons with the Raiders. Myers had 806 total yards (8.2 yards per catch) and four touchdowns. Myers' poor run-blocking score from Pro Football Focus (-20.4, worst among NFL tight ends) will be a concern for the Giants.

2013 Outlook

The way the Giants utilize the tight end it's difficult to envision Myers approaching the 79 catches he had a season ago. It's not hard, however, to see him equaling or surpassing the 55 receptions Bennett had for the Giants in 2012. In his fine Fantasy Football breakdown of Myers, Big Blue View's Dennis Esser points out that Giants tight ends have averaged 52.1 catches, 630.9 yards and 4.7 touchdowns from the 2002 through 2012 seasons. Myers, who seems to be a more precise route runner than Bennett in the small amount of 'All 22' film I looked at, should be able to at least equal those numbers.

Myers averaged 10.2 yards per catch last season compared to 11.4 for Bennett. In 2011 the slow-footed Jake Ballard averaged 15.9 yards per catch on 38 receptions. Giants tight ends coach Mike Pope believes Myers has the ability to get down the field.

"He is a good receiver. I think at the Raiders he was more of an intermediate receiver.," Pope said. "And now our passing game does allow the tight end to get more vertically down the field – flag routes – double seam routes – post routes – that kind of thing. And he appears to have the skills to get those balls. He has a little bit of a jet that can accelerate and go get a ball that is a little deeper. "

The poor blocking in 2012 is undeniably a concern, although there have been some reports that a shoulder injury made blocking more difficult for Myers. He will have to block at least adequately to be a full-time player for the Giants, but he should undoubtedly be an asset for Eli Manning in the passing game.

Myers is going to shine in this offense... upgrade over Bennett as far as reliability goes
