Giants Roster Breakdown #49: Trumaine McBride

Quote
Our player-by-player analysis of the Giants' roster continues today with a look at veteran cornerback Trumaine McBride.

Let's continue our look at the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp by focusing on Trumaine McBride, a veteran player who is competing for a spot as a reserve cornerback.

2012 Season In Review

McBride is a five-year NFL veteran, but did not play in 2012 and has appeared in only one game (for the Jacksonville Jaguars) since 2012. He was with the Jaguars in training camp last season, but was released prior to the beginning of the regular season. A cornerback, he has played in 68 career games, starting 10.

2013 Outlook

McBride signed a reserve/futures contract with the Giants in January. The 27-year-old spent three seasons with the Chicago Bears and one each with the Arizona Cardinals and Jaguars. He will compete for a role as a reserve cornerback and special teams player. Provided the players the Giants are counting on remain healthy it seems difficult to see the 5-foot-9, 185-pound McBride making the 53-man roster.

Giants Roster Breakdown #50: Matt McCants

Quote
Our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp in a couple of weeks continues today with a brief overview of offensive lineman Matt McCants.

2012 Season In Review

The Giants drafted McCants in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL draft, hoping that the 6-foot-7, 295-pounder from UAB could eventually develop into a useful NFL offensive tackle. He spent the season on the Giants' practice squad.

2013 Outlook

McCants is now learning to play center and both guards, thus increasing his value. Whether that means the Giants have given up on the idea he can develop at the tackle position is hard to say. The organization prizes versatility in its offensive linemen, though, which is a key reason why Justin Pugh was their first-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft. The versaility could be McCants' ticket to sticking around, at least by earning a chance to be on the practice squad again.

Giants Roster Breakdown #51: Junior Mertile

Quote
Junior Mertile would seem to have a big mountain to climb in an effort to make it with the New York Giants.

We continue breaking down the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp with a look at Junior Mertile, an undrafted free agent defensive back.

2012 Season In Review

Mertile, 6-foot-1, 197 pounds, completed his career at Florida International University by making 19 tackles and compiling four passes defensed. He began his career at FIU as a wide receiver and was converted to cornerback.

2013 Outlook

It's hard to see how Mertile, signed as an undrafted free agent after rookie camp, makes the 53-man roster or practice squad. He got an opportunity by running 4.36 at his Pro Day and doing enough at rookie camp to earn a spot, but there are so many players in the secondary he would have to leap frog to get one of the final spots on the roster that it doesn't seem likely. He played corner at FIU, but is listed only as a DB by the Giants, meaning they might be considering him as a safety.

Giants Roster Breakdown #52: Damontre Moore

Quote
Rookie defensive end Damontre Moore is next up as we continue breaking down the Giants' 90-man roster.

Damontre Moore was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the New York Giants with the hopes that he would become their next dominant pass-rushing defensive end. As we continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp later this month let's look at what sort of impact Moore might be able to have as a rookie.

2012 Season In Review

Moore was a consensus All-American after a dominant season at Texas A&M, where he compiled 85 tackles (21 for loss) and 12.5 sacks. He finished three seasons at Texas A&M with 26.5 sacks in 38 games.

2013 Outlook

How quickly Moore, who turns 21 in September, receives significant playing time or makes a real impact is anyone's guess. With Jason Pierre-Paul recovering from back surgery and questions about the potential impact of Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka, however, there is an opportunity for Moore. At 6-foot-5, 250 pounds it is unlikely Moore can be an every-down player who can hold up vs. the run at this point, but the Giants will hope that their youngest player develops quickly enough to make an impact as a pass rusher.

To help you set expectations, here are some quick rookie numbers on Giants' defensive ends:

Jason Pierre-Paul (2010, 1st round) -- 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles. All of those came from Week 12 on.
Mathias Kiwanuka (2006, 1st round) -- Four sacks, two forced fumbles. Kiwanuka became a starter Week 8 and all of his sacks came from that point on.
Justin Tuck (2005, 3rd round) -- One sack, one forced fumble, one game started. Tuck did not become an impact player for the Giants until his third season, 2207, when he had 10 sacks, two forced fumbles and 65 tackles.
Osi Umenyiora (2003, 2nd round) -- One sack, one forced fumble, one game started. He had seven sacks in his second season.

The Giants, of course, will hope for JPP/Kiwanuka type rookie production from Moore.
