Giants Roster Breakdown #45: Linval Joseph

Quote
Linval Joseph has become a good player for the Giants at defensive tackle. Can he take the next step and become a dominant one?

Linval Joseph was the New York Giants best defensive tackle in 2012. He is a player the Giants have to hope will take the next step and become a Pro Bowl caliber player. He is also next on our list as we highlight all of the players on the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp later this month.

2012 Season In Review

The 2010 second-round pick became a force for the Giants in 2012, registering 59 tackles and four quarterback sacks. Joseph also had six quarterback hits, 16 hurries and a +6.3 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. Joseph was +4.0 playing the run.

2013 Outlook

The Giants hope Joseph continues getting better. Despite his solid play a season ago the Giants were sub-par against the run. They need him to become a truly dominant force in the middle against the run. The Giants have more depth at defensive tackle this season, but Joseph is clearly the one player they have at the position who should be entering his prime.

Giants Roster Breakdown #46: Mathias Kiwanuka

Quote
Mathias Kiwanuka is moving back to defensive end in 2013.

Mathias Kiwanuka is moving back to defensive end exclusively in 2012. Can that boost Kiwanuka, who seemed missing in action much of the time in 2012. Let's continue our look at the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp by focusing on Kiwanuka, who is entering his eighth season with the Giants.

2012 Season In Review

Truth be told, 2012 was not a great season for Kiwanuka. Whether playing outside linebacker, which he did during the first half of the season, or defensive end, where he spent his time the second half of the season, Kiwanuka had very little impact on the Giants' defense. He had only three sacks and 37 tackles, down from 3.5 and 84 the season before. Kiwanuka played only 539 snaps, a clear indication he was not nearly as important to the defense as he was in 2011, when he played 978 defensive snaps. Kiwanuka's Pro Football Focus score in 2012 was an unsightly -8.4.

2013 Outlook

For the first time in several seasons Kiwanuka will move exclusively to defensive end, his original and natural position. Defensive line coach Robert Nunn said the switch isn't because of the loss of Osi Umenyiora or the back surgery undergone by Jason Pierre-Paul, but because Kiwanuka "wasn't really comfortable" with what the Giants asked him to do at linebacker last season.

The injury to Pierre-Paul could mean Kiwanuka opens the season as the starting right end. Even if he doesn't he will be part of a rotation at defensive end that needs to put more pressure on the quarterback than the Giants generated last season. Kiwanuka's career high in sacks came in 2008 when he registered eight. The Giants will hope he can match or exceed that number while playing with his hand on the ground full time.

Former Aggie Damontre Moore glad to be on winning team of Giants/Cowboys rivalry

Quote
Damontre Moore grew up a Cowboys fan after growing up in the area, attending Rowlett High School.

Then the former Texas A&M defensive end was drafted in the third round by the Giants. He's now on the other side of the Cowboys/Giants rivalry, and that's OK with him.

“I grew up a Dallas fan and, you know, I always watched the Giants,” Moore told the Landry Hat. “Those were always the guys beating Dallas, and I like, I didn’t like them. Now, that I’m on that side, I can be with the winning team.”

In the last five years, the Cowboys have gone 3-7 against the Giants.
