Giants Roster Breakdown #43: Cullen Jenkins

Quote
Cullen Jenkins was the Giants biggest free-agent acquisition of the offseason.

The New York Giants spent most of the offseason trying to acquire veteran free agents on minimum contracts. The exception was defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins. As we roll through our player-by-player look at the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp it is time to discuss Jenkins.

2012 Season In Review

Jenkins had 26 tackles, four sacks and a forced fumble for the disappointing Philadelphia Eagles before hitting the open market. The 32-year-old now has 38.5 career sacks from the defensive tackle position.

2013 Outlook

Jenkins, a nine-year veteran, was the Giants biggest free-agent acquisition, signing a three-year, $8 million contract as the Giants let Chris Canty leave via free agency and revamped the interior of their defense. As a pass-rusher, Jenkins will be counted on to take some of the pressure off defensive ends Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka. Jenkins has been an average to below average run defender throughout his nine-year career, but withe Giants placing a heavy emphasis on improving vs. the run Jenkins will be counted on to play solidly in that aspect.

The performance of the rebuilding defensive tackle rotation will be critical to the success or failure of the Giants defense in 2013, and Jenkins shapes up as the most important new piece to that puzzle.

Giants Roster Breakdown #44: Jerrel Jernigan

Quote
When the Giants drafted Jerrel Jernigan in 2011 they were looking for him to become a playmaker both on ofense and special teams. They are still waiting to see that materialize.

Let's continue rolling through the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp by touching on wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan, who is entering his third season.

2012 Season In Review

In his second season Jernigan made only three catches for 22 yards, but they were the first three of his NFL career. The only kickoff he returned went for 60 yards. Jernigan once again had an opportunity to earn the punt return job but could not secure it because he could not convince the Giants he could secure the ball. While the numbers don't seem like much by season's end he had surpassed Ramses Barden on the depth chart and was getting a handful of snaps in sets calling for extra receivers while Barden sat.

2013 Outlook

Jernigan is once again the mix for the punt and kickoff return jobs, and figures to have a solid chance to return kickoffs if the Giants decide not to allow David Wilson to do that job full time. Jernigan has nine career kickoff returns for a 27.3-yard average, with eight of those in 2011. As a receiver he would appear to be fifth on the depth chart behind Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle and Louis Murphy.

Definitely not this season, no. JPP, Tuck & Kiwi will be the starters.

But he'll play plenty. He's going to assume more of a joker hybrid role.

No rush for him to start. He'll be in the rotation to keep our D-line fresh. Just needs to be a sponge and soak up as much knowledge from everyone his rookie season.
