Giants confident Victor Cruz will sign new long-term deal before camp

Quote
Giants receiver Victor Cruz could still hold out from the start of training camp if the team doesn’t give him the long-term contract he wants. But the Giants apparently don’t think that’s going to happen.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported that there’s a high degree of confidence that Cruz and the Giants will come to an agreement on a long-term extension before training camp begins.

“Everybody I’ve spoken to expects that deal to absolutely get done, to a 100 percent degree of certainty, that Victor Cruz will have a new contract by the time the Giants open training camp,” Mortensen said on NFL Live.

Cruz is almost certain to show up by August 6, as holding out beyond that would cost him the opportunity to become an unrestricted free agent in 2014. But it sounds like the Giants are very confident that this contract negotiation will be over before August, and that Cruz will be locked in for the long term within the next few weeks.

LB Aaron Curry is hungry to get his career on track: ‘I'll be ready whenever they call my number’

Quote
Aaron Curry was believed to be the best linebacker available in the 2009 NFL Draft. He was considered a ‘safe pick’ and there was an argument for the No. 1 pick overall.

Curry ended up being drafted fourth overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2009 NFL Draft.

He spent three year underachieving with the Seahawks until he was traded to the Oakland Raiders in 2011 in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick in 2012 and a conditional pick in 2013.

Quite a fall from grace, but after languishing in Oakland for a year, the New York Giants threw him a rope to save his career.

Code
Curry admits attitude problems and not taking care of his body contributed to his poor performance in the past, but he has a sense of urgency knowing this could be his final shot to show the ability that made him the most sought after LB just a few years ago coming out of college.

"I never felt like my career was over, only my time in Oakland was up,'' Curry said, via Sammy Batten of FayObserver.com.

"This is the first time in my career I've heard a head coach speak opening about the Super Bowl,'' Curry said.

"It's a great environment. It's actually helped me elevate my level of preparation for the mini-camps. I'm taking better care of my body and doing the right things, because you can feel in the locker room and meeting rooms here they know what to do to get the job done.''

"I'm trying not to focus on what I want,'' he said. "I think that kind of set me back early in my career. I've told the coaches if they want me to play one snap in 16 games, that's what I'll do and I'll take full advantage of it. I'll be ready whenever they call my number.''

Does anyone feel like this guy can finally find a home for himself and showcase his talent that everyone once thought he had?

Takes a man to admit he messed up and went about things the wrong way. Feels really really focused and in a good place.

Eli Manning -- QB, 2004-present
Hands down, Manning is the greatest New York Giants quarterback ever. Fans don't give Eli enough credit for what he's accomplished in his nine seasons. He's already brought home two world championships, one against one of the greatest team in NFL history. Manning already has thrown for more touchdowns and fewer interceptions than Phil Simms. This season, Manning will most likely surpass Simms as the Giants all-time leader in passing yards, and solidify his spot as the greatest quarterback in franchise history. For some reason, the perception that Eli Manning is not an elite quarterback still exists, and that makes him underrated.

Giants Roster Breakdown #39: Jayron Hosley

Quote
Jayron Hosley is a player the Giants drafted a season ago hoping he could become a solid slot cornerback. They are still hoping.

Jayron Hosley is a player who could make a big impact in the secondary for the New York Giants in 2013. Let's look at Hosley today as we continue working our way through the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

2012 Season In Review

Drafted in the third round the Giants hoped the 5-foot-10, 178-pound Hosley would make an impact as a slot cornerback and punt returner. Preseason injuries took him out of the running for the punt return job. He played in 12 games and started six at cornerback, but struggled. He had a passer rating against of 121.5 in 465 snaps, and only three cornerbacks were worse. He surrendered completions on 70.2 percent of the 47 passes thrown in his direction.

2013 Outlook

Hosley is once again in the mix for both the punt return and slot cornerback jobs. Aaron Ross has been the starting slot cornerback throughout the offseason program, but the Giants need Hosley to perform better than he did as a rookie, both to give them an option in the slot that would help allow Antrel Rolle to remain at safety and to provide some depth on the outside, where Corey Webster is a question mark and Prince Amukamara has yet to stay healthy for a full season.

Giants Roster Breakdown #40: Henry Hynoski

Quote
Henry Hynoski's knee injury might make the Giants and others realize just how valuable Hynoski is to the team's offense.

Henry Hynoski emerged as an important member of the New York Giants offense in 2012. How important? Now that Hynoski's status is in doubt due to a knee injury there has been lots of chatter about whether or not the Giants should try to bring in Vonta Leach, a three-time All-Pro considered the top fullback in the game, to replace him. Let's spotlight Hynoski as we continue looking at the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

2012 Season In Review

Hynoski, in his second season as an undrafted free agent from Pittsburgh, emerged as one of the NFL's premier fullbacks. The 6-foot-1, 266-pound Hynocerous developed into a devastating run blocker (+7.6 per PFF) and began finding the ball in his hands a bit more often. He caught 12 passes for 83 yards and got the first five carries of his NFL career, gaining 20 yards. He also got to do this for the first time:

2013 Outlook

Cloudy. That's the best word I can think of. We should be celebrating Hynoski turning into a Pro Bowl, and possibly All-Pro, caliber fullback in 2013. Instead, following an unfortunate knee injury suffered during OTAs there are questions about when Hynoski will be available and lots of chatter about Leach.

Hynoski is targeting a Week 1 return for the opener vs. the Dallas Cowboys. Whether or not that will happen remains to be seen.

Giants Roster Breakdown #41: Charles James

Quote
Undrafted free agent cornerback Charles James made himself noticed during the Giants offseason program. Can he carry that momentum into training camp and earn a roster spot?

Let's continue our look at the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training by discussing Charles James, an undrafted free agent cornerback out of Charleston Southern who got the attention of the coaching staff during mini-camp and OTAs.

2012 Season In Review

James finished a four-year career at Charleston Southern in 2012 as he had two interceptions and six passes defensed. He intercepted 12 passes in his four seasons. He also has extensive punt return experience, with 34 career punt returns over three seasons for an average of 9.7 yards per return

2013 Season Outlook

The Giants added James as an undrafted free agent. He has impressed them enough that during mini-camp he was getting reps as a punt and kickoff returner, a sign that the Giants was to see more of his skills. I previously predicted James as being one of the two UDFAs with the best chance of making the roster, and I will stick with that.

Giants Roster Breakdown #42: Michael Jasper

Quote
Michael Jasper is the biggest player on the Giants' current roster. Can he make a big enough impression to stick around into the regular season?

As we continue our player-by-player look at the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp we focus here on massive offensive guard Michael Jasper, at 6-foot-4 and 375 pounds the biggest player the team currently has.

2012 Season In Review

After being cut by the Tennessee Titans during training camp, Jasper spent the season playing for the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL. He played both offensive line and, because of his massive frame, was used as a nose tackle in third-and-short and goal-line situations.

Jasper was originally a seventh-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2011 and spent most of that season on the practice squad. He was placed briefly on the active roster, but never appeared in a game and was let go following the season.

2013 Outlook

Jasper faces an uphill climb in his effort to stick with the Giants. There are a number of drafted players and others who have more NFL experience in front of him. He will have to convince the coaching staff he is more than just a big body to have a chance to at least make the practice squad.
