Giants Roster Breakdown #18: David Carr

Quote
David Carr has been the backup quarterback for Eli Manning in four of the past five seasons. Will that continue in 2013?

As we continue our look at the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp we turn our attention to backup quarterback David Carr. Entering his 12th NFL season Carr is actually one of the more interesting Giants in terms of how the roster is shaped.

2012 Season In Review

Carr played in only two games, completing 2-of-3 passes for 19 yards. That is more action than he saw in 2011, when he did not play at all while backing up Eli Manning. Carr has been Manning's backup four of the past five seasons and has completed 32-of-48 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns during those seasons.

2013 Outlook

Carr returned to the Giants after testing free agency to see if any teams would allow him to compete for their starting job, and finding no takers. To be honest, it would really stink to be in Carr's position right now. If Manning and rookie fourth-round draft pick Ryan Nassib are healthy, and the Giants choose to keep only two quarterbacks, Carr is the odd man out. If they choose to keep three -- which will be determined by Nassib's play and roster needs elsewhere -- Carr stays. There is really nothing Carr can do on the field, positively or negatively, that will really affect that decision. Carr's fate will be determined by how the Giants feel about other people, and no matter how well he handles it that really is not a great spot to be in.

Really hope we cut Carr and don't waste a spot with 3 QB's... Nassib is fine warming the bench, we don't need another one.

Giants Roster Breakdown #19: Jamie Childers

Quote
Jamie Childers is likely trying to earn his way onto the Giants practice squad.

Let's continue our analysis of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will be bringing to training camp in late July with a look at rookie tight end Jamie Childers.

2012 Season In Review

Childers had a tryout with the St. Louis Rams last season, but was one of the first players released during training camp.

2013 Outlook

The Giants signed Childers, 6-foot-4, 250 pounds, to a reserve/futures contract in January. Childers actually played quarterback at Coastal Carolina prior to becoming a tight end. With Brandon Myers, Bear Pascoe, Adrien Robinson, Larry Donnell and chase Clement also on the tight end depth chart it's hard to see Childers earning even a practice squad nod, although that wouldn't be impossible.

Giants Roster Breakdown #20: Chase Clement

Quote
Could undrafted free agent tight end Chase Clement make the 53-man roster?

Let's continue our look at the 90-man roster the New York Giants will open training camp with by discussing undrafted free agent tight end Chase Clement, an intriguing player out of LSU.

2012 Season In Review

Clement was a tight end for the LSU Tigers in 2012, and was used primarily in a blocking role. He caught only 14 passes in three seasons as a tight end after converting from the defensive line, including five last season.

2013 Outlook

The Giants worked out Clement at their rookie camp and eventually signed him after fullback Henry Hynoski was injured. Head coach Tom Coughlin said that Clement could be used "not only as a tight end, but as a move fullback type guy." Tight ends coach Mike Pope said that we he first saw the 6-foot-4, 265-pound Clement he "had visions of Jake Ballard," the former Giants tight end now in New England. Pope also said "there is something to work with there."

Does that mean Clement will make the team? Not necessarily. The Giants have Brandon Myers, Adrien Robinson and Bear Pascoe. They always seem to keep at least one tight end on the practice squad, however, and Clement could wind up as that guy this time around.

Giants Roster Breakdown #21: Brandon Collins

Quote
Brandon Collins is back for a second shot at making the New York Giants roster. This time he might have a better chance than he did a year ago.

Brandon Collins is an intriguing wide receiver prospect for the New York Giants. He is also the player we focus on here as we continue our look at the 90-man roster the Giants will open training camp with.

2012 Season In Review

Collins was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Giants in May of 2012 after completing his collegiate career at Southeast Louisiana. He impressed during training camp, but was unable to crack a roster deep with wide receivers. He was signed to the Giants' practice squad on Sept. 4, but had his contract terminated on Sept. 10 and was not re-signed.

2013 Outlook

The fact that Collins has been suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the season due to a violation of the league's substance abuse policy clouds his outlook for 2013. Collins is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games, but you have to wonder what this might do to his eventual opportunity to make the 53-man roster.

Despite not keeping the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Collins on their practice squad in 2012 the Giants were interested enough to sign him to a reserve/futures contract on Jan. 4. Collins has been impressive enough to believe that -- prior to the suspension -- Collins had a realistic chance at earning the final wide receiver spot on the roster. Whether or not that is the case once the suspension is served is anybody's guess. It likely depends on exactly how impressive Collins is during the preseason.

Giants Roster Breakdown #22: Dan Connor

Quote
The competition between Dan Connor and Mark Herzlich for the Giants starting middle linebacker job is one of the most intriguing of the upcoming preseason.

As we continue our look at the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp we focus on middle linebacker Dan Connor, one of the free-agent acquisitions the Giants made in the offseason as they focused on improving their run defense.

2012 Season In Review

Connor, 27, spent 2012 with the Dallas Cowboys after four seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Miscast in the Dallas 3-4 defense, Connor started eight games and made 56 tackles. His rating from Pro Football Focus was a less than stellar -3.6.

2013 Outlook

When Connor signed there was an assumption that he would immediately move to the top of the depth chart as the replacement for former middle linebacker Chase Blackburn. That has not happened. Mark Herzlich, Blackburn's backup, has been with the first unit throughout the offseason. Herzlich has impressed the coaching staff and believes the job is his to win.

Connor has started 27 NFL games in the past three seasons. Playing the middle in Carolina's 4-3 in 2011 he had a +3.2 PFF rating vs. the run while playing 15 games and starting 11.

Herzlich, who will be 26 when the season begins, has four career starts in two seasons. He played 350 defensive snaps a season ago and was -4.0 vs. the run.

This will be one of the most intriguing positions to watch during training camp.

Giants Roster Breakdown #23: Jim Cordle

Quote
Jim Cordle has been a useful reserve offensive lineman for the Giants for the past two seasons. The addition of several young linemen appears to put Cordle's roster spot in jeopardy.

Jim Cordle is a player who seems like he has been around the New York Giants for a long time, yet one we have still seen very little of. Cordle is in the spotlight today as we continue our look at the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

2012 Season In Review

Cordle, a backup guard/center, was active for all 16 games in 2012. He played 49 offensive snaps, seeing limited action action at both guard positions and center.

2013 Outlook

Cordle (@JimCordle63 on Twitter) spent the 2010 season with the Giants after signing out of Ohio State as an undrafted free agent. He made the practice squad again in 2011 and was eventually added to the active roster, appearing nine games. He would appear to have a serious challenge on his hands to make the roster again in 2013. Brandon Mosley, the 2012 fourth-round pick, is healthy after spending 2012 on IR. He has been working at guard. The Giants drafted offensive lineman Justin Pugh in the first round and guard Eric Herman in the seventh. Cordle, who turns 26 in August, would appear to be out of practice squad eligibility per NFL rules.

Giants Roster Breakdown #24: Michael Cox, RB

Quote
Can rookie Michael Cox run his way onto the Giants' 53-man roster?

Rookie running back Michael Cox is a player the New York Giants drafted despite a lack of college production. Can he make the team? We look at Cox today as we continue to profile the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

2012 Season In Review

After barely playing in three seasons at Michigan, Cox transferred to UMass for his senior season. The Minutemen went 1-11, but the move was a wise one for Cox. He carried 198 times for 715 yards (3.61 per carry) and showed enough despite playing for an over-matched team that the Giants drafted him in the seventh round. When the Giants took him, College Scouting Director Marc Ross called the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Cox "a little biit of an under the radar guy."

"If you look at his stats at UMass, they aren’t that impressive but he gets the ball and there are two guys in the backfield, he’s trying to make everything on his own there," Ross said. "Runs hard, he’s got size, he’s got really, really good hands, excellent hands, got a little burst to him. We had him in for a visit, real good kid. Our coaches were impressed with him so we were happy we’re getting a big, fast guy who runs hard that late in the draft."

2013 Outlook

David Wilson and Andre Brown are the Giants' top two backs. Cox could threaten Da'Rel Scott and Ryan Torain in a bid for a spot behind those two. If he doesn't make the roster, it would seem likely the Giants would try to pass him through waivers and get him to the practice squad. I think, though, there might be a question about whether or not Cox would go unclaimed if he were placed on waivers.
