Desmond Bishop narrows to 3 teams: NYG, KC, MIN

Quote
There aren’t many free agents worth pursuing at this time of year, but the ones who are out there are drawing plenty of attention.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, former Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop is “still deciding” between offers from the Giants, Chiefs and Vikings.

That would ostensibly exclude the Jaguars, who had been mentioned by Bishop himself as a possibility. Rapoport also mentioned that he heard the list was down to three.

If Bishop can get well and stay well, he’d be an upgrade for many teams. The Vikings were the first name most thought of, and his first visit. The Chiefs make sense for the John Dorsey connection from his Packers days. But the Giants are breaking in a brand new set of linebackers anyway, so adding Bishop wouldn’t disrupt anything that’s been installed to this point.

Decisions decisions!!! Stuff spot, but great position to be in because I have options. Truly a blessing.

Bishop would be smart to sign with us as it gives him the best chance a contending AND starting.

With the Jags being out of it, this really opens up the door for the Giants. Jacksonville had a ridiculous amount of cap space to use a bargaining chip.

Giants: $3,308,682

Giants up their offer to Vonta Leach

Quote
With fullback Henry Hynoski still recovering from knee surgery, and with concerns that he won't be ready for the start of the regular season, the Giants are pondering a last-ditch effort to sign free agent fullback Vonta Leach, the Daily News has learned. The 31-year-old Leach was released by the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago and appeared set to sign with the Miami Dolphins. But according to two NFL sources, the Giants have remained in contact with his agent and are considering upping their offer to him. They had hoped to lure Leach with the standard one-year, minimum-salary deal they've given to most of their free agents this offseason.

Official Salary Cap space for all 32 teams – as of 6/23/13

The Giants are $3,308,682 under the cap as of today:

.
.
.
.

•Keep these numbers in mind when discussing the Vonta Leach and Desmond Bishop situations in free agency.

•The Giants' cap number will go down by roughly slightly less than 1 million dollars after the sign Justin Pugh, but not Ryan Nassib (Nassib's expected cap number won't fit into the top 51 cap numbers on the team).

•The Top 51 Rule is in effect until midnight NY time on Thursday, Sept. 5th; after team cap number calculations will include the 52nd and 53rd players on the roster along with the 8 man practice squad.

•The Eagles have plenty of room. No surprise there.

•The Redskins, conversely, have next to nothing in cap space (with only the Rams having less), and will need to make more space under the cap before the Top 51 Cap rule expires in 74 days on September 5th.

•The Cowboys look good now, but going forward they're in as bad shape as can be. They are a house of cards waiting to collapse. J.J. has no clue what he's doing down there w/respect to the cap, and it will cost them dearly as times goes on, even though most people don't understand why now.

Giants Roster Breakdown #15: David Caldwell

Quote
Safety David Caldwell would seem to have a difficult task in trying to make the New York Giants roster for 2013.

Let's continue our breakdown of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp by looking at safety David Caldwell.

2012 Season In Review

Caldwell was out of the NFL last season, having been cut by the Indianapolis Colts just prior to the start of the season. He played all 16 games for the Colts in 2011, starting 13. He made 67 tackles and had four passes defensed. He had an average -0.4 rating from Pro Football Focus. He made the Indianapolis roster in 2011 as an undrafted free agent from William & Mary.

2013 Outlook

Caldwell faces a tough climb to make the Giants' roster. Behind starters Antrel Rolle and Stevie Brown the Giants have Ryan Mundy, Will Hill, Tyler Sash and fifth-round draft pick Cooper Taylor. There is also the possibility that Terrell Thomas could wind up included in that group. Undrafted free agent Alonzo Tweedy, brought in primarily for his special teams coverage ability, is also listed as a safety.

Giants Roster Breakdown #16: Selvish Capers

Quote
Selvish Capers has been with the Giants on the practice squad or as a reserve lineman the past two seasons. Can he stick around for a third season?

Let's continue breaking down the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp by looking at Selvish Capers, an offensive lineman who will be competing for a spot as a reserve.

2012 Season In Review

The 2010 seventh-round selection by the Washington Redskins, saw the first regular-season NFL action of his career in 2012, getting into three games with the Giants. Prior to that, Capers had been on and off the Giants' practice squad a number of times since the Giants signed him Sept. 5, 2011 after he was waived by the Redskins.
-
2013 Outlook

The drafting of Justin Pugh in the first round and Eric Herman in the seventh, along with the return from injured reserve of 2012 fourth-round pick Brandon Mosley, could spell trouble for Capers in his effort to make the roster. NFL players can spend as many as three seasons on practice squads. Capers has already spent at least parts of three seasons (one with Washington, two with the Giants) on practice squads, so whether or not he is eligible is questionable.

Giants Roster Breakdown #17: Keith Carlos

Quote
Wide receiver Keith Carlos would seem like an unlikely candidate to make the Giants' 53-man roster.

We continue our look at the New York Giants 90-man training roster by focusing on wide receiver Keith Carlos, a player who was only signed within the last few weeks.

2012 Season In Review

Carlos, 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, was out of football in 2012 after a brief stint with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011. He has never appeared in an NFL game. Carlos played college football at Purdue, where he was used both at wide receiver and running back. For Purdue he caught 21 passes in 2009 and ran for 314 yards in 2010.

2013 Outlook

Carlos seems like the classic definition of a camp body. With Victor Cruz not attending any of the offseason program or mini-camp, and Hakeem Nicks having skipped OTAs, the Giants added Carlos to the roster. Carlos would seem to be a long shot to make the roster, or even the practice squad. Right now young wide receivers Brandon Collins and Jeremy Horne would seem better candidates to stick around.
