2014 AFC South Standings

Texans 2-0
Titans 1-1
Colts 0-2
Jaguars 0-2

It's early in the season but I'll take it. Houston needs to beat the Giants on Sunday and reach 3-0. The six division games for the Texans could be very exciting this season. They may actually have some importance unlike last season. A lot of people picked the Colts to run away with the AFC South entering this season but you still have to play the games. Bill O'Brien is the right head coach for this team. He has them playing smart, turnover free football.

He played the final few minutes of Sunday's game against the Raiders when the Texans had a 30-7 lead. Bill O'Brien took out all of the starters. The Texans missed a field goal and the Raiders scored a garbage time Touchdown against the Texans second-string defense with a few seconds left to make it a 30-14 final

Ryan Fitzpatrick is a pure game manager playing a lot better than I expected. Until the Texans lose games there is no reason to take him out even if Ryan Mallett has the bigger upside. I knew this would happen before the season started. Ryan Mallett was acquired too far into the off-season. Had he been acquired back on draft night he probably would have beaten out Fitzpatrick for the starting job.

The Texans are -2.5 and favored to beat the Giants on the road this Sunday. I was hoping the Texans would have that underdog mentality going into this game just so they can have something to prove. After all they're playing future hall of fame quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion, Eli Manning, at his house a.k.a. MetLife Stadium.

I want to make it seem like the Texans are facing an uphill battle going into this game. Give me something positive about the 0-2 Giants? This is a dangerous game just because the Giants are hungry for their first win of the season. Tom Coughlin is an excellent head coach and will have the G-Men ready to play at home. If the Texans win this game and reach 3-0 they will have already won more games than last season.

I just want to feel good and enjoy a 3-0 record on Sunday. But leading up to the game it's okay to "Fear Eli Manning and the Giants." If for nothing else just to point out their past success. They have been the best team in all of football twice in the past seven years. That's nothing to sneeze at regardless of what kind of team they have right now.

After last season I realize the Texans don't have the luxury of taking any opponent lightly.

Like Jimmy Johnson likes to say, - "When you go up against a big gorilla, you don't hit him lightly. You hit him with everything you got!"

In fact, I think the Texans have to win these next two games against the Giants on the road and Bills at home. A 4-0 start would be huge before the schedule gets a little tougher: at Cowboys, Colts, at Steelers, at Titans and Eagles before the bye week. Jadeveon Clowney should return for either the Colts or Steelers game.

I think it's possible the Texans could be 7-2 or 6-3 at the bye week and in position to make the playoffs.
The Texans would still have two games left against the hapless Jaguars inside their pockets late in the year.

But these next two games against the Giants and Bills are huge. I would almost call them must-win games for the Texans.
