Because that's not what NE does..... They expect people to play for less than what they can get on the open market (usually significantly less), it's the price of staying with a team that's literally a contender every single year. Once again, I have disagreed heavily with them in the past on this tactic, but it seems to work, so fuck it.
also the other bad thing about big contracts (especially with guaranteed money up front) is the player may not play as hard e.g. Suh in Miami
not to mention when's the last time New England let a player walk (because they didn't want to pay up) and that player went on to be wildly successful on another team? doesn't happen often. Look at Revis in New York right now LOL. Shane Vereen couldnt even stay on the field this year. Probably missing many more good examples oh well
