Besides Jadeveon Clowney, the Louis Nix selection in the third round was just as exciting to me. Well worth trading up for in the third round because a big nose tackle - ranging from 330 to 350 pounds - with his type of skill set is very difficult to find. He's been known to eat up two blockers and it was the norm for him at Notre Dame.

And then they added Jeoffrey Pagan out of Alabama in the sixth round, a guy that can play defensive right end in a base 3-4 defense. He can certainly become an upgrade over Jared Crick because he's bigger and stronger (more upside). He'll probably prove to the coaches he can at least rotate there and play right away as a rookie because let's face it, we weren't getting much production out of that other defensive end position for the past few years. Antonio Smith became overpaid and useless. So glad he's in Oakland now, along with Matt Schaub.

The Texans will play different sub-packages and also nickel and dime anyways. So we'll see Clowney and Watt both on the defensive line as well. Romeo Crennel has a ton of talent to play with on defense. He's like a fat man inside a candy store. I trust Bill O'Brien will work his expertise on the offensive side of the ball.

There are no excuses for the Texans not to improve from 2-14 a year ago. I believe they can win a lot of games in 2014.

I hope he plays with a chip on his shoulder. Slipping to the sixth round. He thought he was graded as a third-round pick. His shoulder injury likely dropped his stock.

When we do play a base 3-4, I'd like to see Watt LE, Nix NT, Pagan RE up front. And then Clowney ROLB, Reed and Cushing ILB and Mercilus LOLB. But a lot depends on how ready to play Nix and Pagan are as rookies. Romeo Crennel could start Powe at NT and Crick at RE since they are veterans. All I know for sure is that Jadeveon Clowney will start from day one. The other rookies on defense will have to work hard to prove they are starters.

Louis Nix and Jeoffrey Pagan have the talent to start as rookies. They just have to show they are healthy and hungry. Both were good players in college.

I don't even care if he reports to camp at 350 pounds in July. Let the man eat. He'll love Houston. The bigger the better. I understand he'll play better at 330 but still. Vince Wilfork never ate a meal he didn't like and has had a fine pro career despite those lingering weight issues.

We need this guy to beast at nose tackle as soon as possible. J.J. Watt will be able to rack up the sacks if he does. Also Clowney from the other side should produce double-digit sacks. The Texans defense has potential to be dominating but a lot depends on how much these rookies are willing to work and improve, and how much they want to become great players. J.J. Watt will get the best out of them as will the coaches.

I'm not worried about any of their work ethic. It just seems too good to be true. I hope they all live up to their potential.

Houston Texans safety Lonnie Ballentine aka Mr. Irrelevant joins "Path to the Draft" to talk about being the last player selected in the 2014's NFL Draft.

The Texans have again talked to OLB Brooks Reed about moving to inside linebacker.

Houston has been giving Reed training camp reps inside for the past few years. After the selection of Jadeveon Clowney No. 1 overall, now is likely the time Reed actually makes the transition. The Texans have a gaping hole next to ILB Brian Cushing. Clowney and Whitney Mercilus will man the outside spots. Reed has proven to be an adequate run defender throughout his career.

No surprise. It was obvious Brooks Reed was going to make the move to inside linebacker full time in 2014.
Clowney, Reed, Cushing and Mercilus starting at the linebacker positions. Watt, Nix and Pagan on the D-Line.
Romeo Crennel may start the veterans Jerrell Powe at NT and Jared Crick at RE if he feels the rookies aren't ready.
That's when the Texans play their base 3-4 defense. They're going to play different packages with a four-man front.

May 27: That's a key date for the Texans and Patriots to complete a Ryan Mallett trade.

I can't blame Andre Johnson for having doubts about this team. We don't have a legitimate starting quarterback.

#Texans say they are not commenting at this time about Andre Johnson's statements today. #NFL

John McClain @McClain_on_NFL 2h
If Texans thought Johnson would be a long-term issue, they would have drafted a WR. They didn't. He'll be back, just a matter of when.

Andre Johnson is likely to skip OTAs and mini-camp in June. Both are voluntary just like the one he skipped last week.

Dre is still under contract for 3 more years. The right thing for us to do is to trade him, but if our QB wants to be successful he needs a great WR like Andre. Sucks to hear this shit. He really wants to win, and he knows it's not gonna happen with us any time soon.
