They can call offensive/defensive hold or interference on ANY play they want.

Normally they use this when they fuck up a call that next drive the other team will get the benefit of the doubt on another needless call to cancel the two out(Happens in a lot of sports)

Can't complain though it was a great game up until that point

Professional sports is and will be ruined by a growing betting market. Seen a stat line that for the year something like 100 billion was bet on nfl , 16billion on Super Bowl alone. To put it into perspective average worth of an NFL is around 3.5billion.

When you’re talking that type of money there is massive incentive to get the desired outcome. You have tv deals, product sales but this is their new growth engine to make massive bank.
