What in the world do you actually like about this sport? Just bragging rights and a pass to talk smack?
What is it that you personally enjoy out of a football game. I rarely hear that side of a football fan.
I'll entertain your curiosity. There's some key elements to the game that make it so great: specialization and format.
Lineman are typically well over 6 feet and 300+ pounds. Generally enormous human beings, and quick for their size. They line up directly across from each other and fight for the ground right over the ball. That's the line of scrimmage, and a lot of casuals who never played football don't understand how critical the game at the line is. If a team can dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball they will dominate the other team. The first stage of the game is neutralizing the line of scrimmage, that's why teams fight to establish the running attack, because it pulls defenders to the line and opens up the field. If you see a team start to gash 7 yard runs consistently and the defense doesn't respond you're probably going to see the other team pull away and dominate. If the run game is neutralized the field gets opened up and the smaller and faster skill players work their magic. You have guys under 6 feet under 200 pounds playing the same sport as the lineman, but really it's a different game entirely. Football is all about the game within the game. You have the defensive and offensive coordinators playing a chess game with their play and coverage calls. You have the quarterback managing the game clock and reading the defense, motions to reveal coverage, stunts to confuse the protection schemes, play designs to confuse the defense and expose weak spots in coverage, and then you have generational players like Patrick Mahomes who can do all of that and also just ad-lib, and do something based on what he sees and freestyle some magic.
If you don't understand why football is awesome watch the Chiefs playoff run 🍻
