ttwentyman: Martin Mayhew said the #Lions won't pick up the fifth-year option on Nick Fairley's contract. Lions want a motivated Fairley in 2014.
davebirkett: The option was for about $5.5M. Mayhew said he doesn't see Fairley as a $5M player right now. Needs to be more consistent
davebirkett: From conversations with Fairley's agent, Mayhew said Fairley is excited about the chance to prove the #Lions wrong

ttwentyman: Mayhew also said he's not interested in trading RB Mikel Leshoure. Mayhew wants to see how he performs this season.

Leshoure is actually an interesting player to me. I hope he has had the time he needs to put his shit together.

Fairley needs some incentive to perform.

Yeah true dat. Well what sucks to me about is--is that if he does have a great season this year-- his price goes up. But what can be wrong with fairley and suh both playing
For a contract. Sounds like a pass rush to me.

Yeah I agree. And I mean, this year should be dope. And I don't think Suh is playing just for money. I think he wants to win and he wants to be the best DT there ever was.

However, if Fairley needs Money to motivated him...

1. If he is good next year... he will be a UFA. So what will other teams offer?
2. If he is good next year... and we resign him. Can we expect that he'll be good for the following years w/o the contract looming over his head?

With as much as we are looking at him... I could really see us trading up for him still.
Mayhew said the other day that he "didn't see 10 elite players in the draft."
I really didn't think it was possible but the lions are not backing away and Mayhew doesn't like what we are getting at 10.
