Romeo Crennel to be named new Texans defensive coordinator

New Texans coach Bill O’Brien met with the existing Texans staff and fired them all, and will name Romeo Crennel as his defensive coordinator.

Alex Marvez ✔ @alexmarvez
O'Brien met briefly with assistants to fire them. Didn't ask for feedback on current players. Expect heavy @patriots feel to new staff
9:25 AM - 4 Jan 2014

Meanwhile, as for O'Brien's remaining staff, Marvez reports that Patriots tight ends coach George Godsey could be a candidate for the Texans offensive coordinator job, and that Brian Ferentz, currently at the University of Iowa, is a "strong candidate" to be the Texans' offensive line coach.

Good chance that Romeo Crennel becomes #Texans DC. But not yet. Just texted me, “Still unemployed.” Will coach East-West game in 2 weeks

I guess it's not official yet but it will be soon. He plays a 3-4 defense doesn't he? I remember he won three Super Bowls as the Patriots defensive coordinator from 2001 to 2004. The Patriots have not won another Super Bowl since he left. He was the best defensive coordinator they had in the Bill Belichick coaching tree.

I'm thinking this now means we probably won't draft Jadeveon Clowney, who I felt would have been better suited as a 4-3 defensive end.
Anthony Barr is now a better fit for us if we decide to draft defense with our top pick or if we trade down. I still like Johnny Football.'

Like I posted on the last page, the Houston Texans are going to field trading offers for the first pick. That's probably our best bet.
It's not a 100 % slam dunk that we will draft Teddy Bridgewater. Even though he is talented and worthy of that selection.

Also interestingly enough, Bill O'Brien has praised Blake Bortles before. He's seen him first hand playing against Penn State.
Still a lot of time from now until the start of the 2014 NFL Draft on May 8. So I expect there to be a lot of evaluations going on.

I'm okay trading down as long as it's not too far down. Depends on whether or not we can receive a boat load of extra picks similar to what the Redskins offered to the Rams for Robert Griffin III a few years ago. Does a team value Teddy Bridgewater that much? And we can still end up with Johnny Football aka the local cash cow. I'd rather just draft Jadeveon Clowney number one overall but I'm okay with Bridgewater as well.

Texans owner Bob McNair says Texans could trade No. 1 pick in draft

http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2014/01/texans-could-trade-no-1-pick-in-draft/

The Houston Texans have the No. 1 overall pick in the May draft.

That doesn’t mean they will use the No. 1 overall pick in the May draft.

“There’s always the possibility that (general manager) Rick (Smith) and the coaches will trade around,” owner Bob McNair said. “Maybe we’ll trade down and pick up more picks and still get a quarterback that can do the job, and get that outstanding defensive player. It’s an exciting time. Everything’s a moving target, a lot of moving pieces, it’s a fun time.”

The Texans finished 2-14, losing their last 14 games and earning the third top draft choice in franchise history.

Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has been the player most talked about as the top draft prospect. Central Florida’s Blake Bortles and Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel also are mentioned as top quarterback prospects.

And the quarterback position is the Texans top need.

“One of the things, if we wind up with a young quarterback, we’d probably bring in a veteran so that we don’t have to depend on that rookie,” McNair said. “That’s tough, putting a rookie in there and expecting him to be able to play right off the bat. There have been a couple of them that have done it, but a number of them didn’t do so well. I think having that veteran presence in there is real important.”

South Carolina defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney and UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr are possibilities with the No. 1 pick as well.

McNair has been watching the star players in bowl games.

“They’re exciting,” McNair said. “There are a lot of terrific players out there. There are some quarterbacks out there, of course with a quarterback there’s more risk in picking a quarterback No. 1. And you’ve got some great defensive players out there who are unusual. Yeah, they’re special, they’re special.”

I know you've voiced your support for Clowney and Bridgewater, and at different times have said you would like either of them at #1.

But I'm going to go a little against the grain and say that the Texans should draft Johnny Manziel. I know he has size concerns, and whether all of his skills can translate to the next level, and a huge amount of off-the-field concerns, but I think we should take him at #1.

On the field, I've never seen a talent like him. He's very unique. Obviously, he's at his best when he can scramble around and make plays. I'm tired of watching immobile QBs play. If Schaub got pressured, he was almost useless. Manziel seemingly thrives under duress. And as a passer, he can destroy you. I've seen him make throws and put the football in tiny windows that a lot of NFL QB's would struggle to do.

He kept Texas A&M in games, with an anemic defense, against staunch SEC opponents that they really had no business keeping up with, let alone beating. I think he's the spark the Texans need. I don't even think we should risk trading down with this pick. I think we should grab Johnny Manziel with our #1 pick on draft day before any other team gets him.

I think you guys should read this. Bridgewater vs Manziel

Also, Romeo Crennel has accepted the DC job. Good hire, we're probably going to get a big NT now. That'll be nice, especially if he can force DTs and free up JJ Watt.

Texans owner: J.J. Watt would be mentor for Jadeveon Clowney

Video inside the link. Bob McNair is talking about Jadeveon Clowney.

If the Houston Texans draft South Carolina star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, don't be surprised if owner Bob McNair has Clowney's locker placed next to that of Texans star J.J. Watt. McNair, being an alum of South Carolina, has obviously been paying attention to both the praise and criticism of Clowney.

"He's not a J.J. Watt," McNair said. "J.J. didn't have that natural (ability). He worked. He developed his. I said to J.J., 'I don't know what will happen but if we get Clowney, we want you to instill in him the same kind of work habits that you have.' He said, 'Well, if he's in the same room with me, he'll have them.'"

"He is a remarkable player. He's one of these players that is really a once-in-every-10-years kind of physical specimen that comes along. Mario Williams was that way. I think Clowney is actually a better athlete than Mario, so that kind of tells you what kind of player he can be," McNair said. "Like many of these fellows who have these great physical attributes, they didn't have to work as hard in junior high school, in high school, and in college, to be a superlative athlete, because they had this natural ability."

I heard Romeo Crennel has experience coaching both a 4-3 and 3-4 defense in the NFL. He had his best success coaching a 3-4 with the Patriots when he won three Super Bowls in four years as their defensive coordinator. I'm sure he would put J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney in the best possible position to succeed though. Maybe the Texans are just blowing smoke and bluffing though. Everybody knows they need a quarterback. Would they really draft Clowney?

Maybe Alex was right a few months ago when he said the Texans should release Arian Foster and just move on. I thought the idea was crazy back then but this situation aside he needs to prove he's still a top three running back with a big 2014 season. He's never healthy anymore which is a huge problem. The guy let that big contract get to his head a few years ago.

I mean what the heck is he doing with a 20-year-old chick from U of H? He's supposed to be a happily married man with kids.
People keep saying they base things on his performance on the field. I'd like to do that also if he can ever stay healthy again.
At least now we know what he was doing last summer when he should have been rehabbing and getting himself healthy for 2013.

Not saying that isn't true, but almost everyone thought Jameis Winston raped a girl too.

And besides, Arian isn't the first married player to fuck other women, and he wont be the last.

No reason for him to be cut. He was 2nd in the AFC in rushing yards before he got hurt in that KC game, he'll still be the same player.
