Texans announce they will have Friday press conference; Bill O’Brien will be introduced as new coach

The Houston Texans have announced they will have an 11 a.m. press conference on Friday to introduce Bill O’Brien as the third coach in franchise history. The news of O’Brien hiring has been reported by the Houston Chronicle and media outlets throughout the country since he agreed to a five-year contract on Tuesday.

O’Brien led Penn State – stripped of scholarships and bowl games because of the Jerry Sandusky scandal – to a 15-9 overall record in two season. He previously was in the New England Patriots organizations for five years, including as an offensive coordinator for a team that reached the Super Bowl.

O’Brien takes over a 2-14 Texans team that had the worst record in the NFL and earned the No. 1 overall pick in May’s NFL draft.

J.J. Watt was at that game because he has two younger brothers who play for Wisconsin. The announcers mention at the end of that video the possibility of Clowney and Watt playing together. That's a thought I've had since last year and it would make a lot of sense if we move to a 4-3 defense. I'd hate to pass up on Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Manziel though. This is 2006 all over again: Should we draft Mario Williams, Reggie Bush or the local star Vince Young?

LOL, the second deflection was off his helmet. 6'6 and 274. Can likely bulk up to 290 in the pros. J.J. Watt did the same when he came out of Wisconsin. He probably wants to remain lighter for now to post a good 40-time at the combine. But man I'm still sold on him.

I know we need a quarterback but having two beasts at defensive end who can pressure quarterbacks is important also. Not just sacks but they're so good at wrapping up and making plays. Tackles for losses, pass deflections, it all adds up. When you have two guys like that on the defensive line it's very difficult for opposing offenses to game plan for you.

I'm assuming we'll move to a 4-3 defense unless Bill O'Brien keeps Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator but that's unlikely.

Here was his tackle for loss in that game. I posted it in the bowl game thread a few days ago. Wisconsin didn't think he would make the play. They didn't block him because it was a design run between the right guard and right tackle and they had max blocking stacked up going in that direction. He had the impressive quickness to make that tackle with ease. He covers up so much ground in a blink of an eye.

It would be hard for me to compare a possible Clowney and Watt tandem. That would have potential to be very dominating.
But it's not about the sacks to me. Like I said, it's about making plays and winning games. Right now our defense isn't very good.
If we have play a 4-3 defense and have Clowney and Watt at DE and Brian Cushing at MLB. That's a very nice foundation to have.

Clowney sounds nice, but we need an ILB and DBs more than we need a DE. Give me Bridgewater all day.

If you're convinced Teddy Bridgewater is that guy then I'm right there with you. We can be good again in 2014 (AFC South Champions) if the right choices are made. Assuming Arian Foster and Brian Cushing return to health. Having those two guys back will make a world of difference. A good draft would be icing on the cake.

Bill O'Brien's press conference is on right now. Being introduced as the Texans new coach.
I'm watching it on CSN Houston. It's also on the NFL Network as well. Just started.

I'm okay trading down as long as it's not too far down. Depends on whether or not we can receive a boat load of extra picks similar to what the Redskins offered to the Rams for Robert Griffin III a few years ago. Does a team value Teddy Bridgewater that much? And we can still end up with Johnny Football aka the local cash cow. I'd rather just draft Jadeveon Clowney number one overall but I'm okay with Bridgewater as well.

Texans owner Bob McNair says Texans could trade No. 1 pick in draft

The Houston Texans have the No. 1 overall pick in the May draft.

That doesn’t mean they will use the No. 1 overall pick in the May draft.

“There’s always the possibility that (general manager) Rick (Smith) and the coaches will trade around,” owner Bob McNair said. “Maybe we’ll trade down and pick up more picks and still get a quarterback that can do the job, and get that outstanding defensive player. It’s an exciting time. Everything’s a moving target, a lot of moving pieces, it’s a fun time.”

The Texans finished 2-14, losing their last 14 games and earning the third top draft choice in franchise history.

Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has been the player most talked about as the top draft prospect. Central Florida’s Blake Bortles and Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel also are mentioned as top quarterback prospects.

And the quarterback position is the Texans top need.

“One of the things, if we wind up with a young quarterback, we’d probably bring in a veteran so that we don’t have to depend on that rookie,” McNair said. “That’s tough, putting a rookie in there and expecting him to be able to play right off the bat. There have been a couple of them that have done it, but a number of them didn’t do so well. I think having that veteran presence in there is real important.”

South Carolina defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney and UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr are possibilities with the No. 1 pick as well.

McNair has been watching the star players in bowl games.

“They’re exciting,” McNair said. “There are a lot of terrific players out there. There are some quarterbacks out there, of course with a quarterback there’s more risk in picking a quarterback No. 1. And you’ve got some great defensive players out there who are unusual. Yeah, they’re special, they’re special.”

On the right track. We already signed our new defensive coordinator. I'm starting to see a blueprint for success in place.
