Agreed but you also need pursuit to stop the qb and runningbacks. Which we seem to lack both a line and MLB's to plug the holes.
If you look at the 49er defense, they have a great 3-4 because they have a great line and GREAT MLB's, two of the best in the league to stop pursuit. When you think of the 49er's defense, what do you think is there core in your opinion? (Just curious, I mean for me it's the MLB's that make the heart of that defense)
I have a hard time going with anybody besides Justin Smith, simply because we saw what happened when he went out and how big of a difference he was to that defense. I can see both sides of this, but I thing with a good DL, the pair of Bishop/Hawk is more than serviceable. I don't know that we've ever really recovered from the loss of Cullen Jenkins upfront.
The problem with Hawk is that people expect a lot from him, especially due to his contract. Capers accepts that Hawk's job is to get other people into position to make plays. So Hawk is never going to put up big stats, but he'll be graded by the team a lot better than the fans and most of the media will ever give him credit for.
