Wharton County, Texas – The Wharton County Sheriff's Department is trying to solve a gruesome mystery out of El Campo.

According to Sgt. Scott Grosser, 43 animals including sheep, rams and emus were found shot to death in a pasture off County Road 406. Investigators believe the animals were killed over a two night spree last Thursday and Friday.

"Somebody knows what happened," said Grosser. "It's really strange. I've never seen anything where people will just go kill a large number of farm animals. It doesn't make sense."

Deputies believe the animals were shot at point blank range and many of their deaths would not have been quick because of the parts of the body they were shot.

"I can't speculate as to a motive at this time or if it was one person or several people. If it was just a random act of spontaneous animal killing or if there was something more personal in nature."

The value of the livestock is estimated at $20,000.

"It's bad enough that you're killing somebody's animals, but then you're also messing with their livelihood too," explained Grosser.
