Del Rio isn't great, but you could do worse...he took a bad Jags franchise and got them to the playoffs twice. We have more to work with than the Jags, so no reason to expect he couldn't do it again. But with Shanahan available...fml I would really like him.

Del Rio actually had some good talent when he took over the Jags. It wasn't until the last few years when that roster had about as much talent as an expansion team.

He had an older Brunell, but a young Garrard and Marcedes Lewis. Fred Taylor in his prime, two absolute freaks at DT in Stroud and Henderson. Tony Brackens (he was never the same after shredding his knee though) and Reggie Hayward (before he shredded his achilles) at DE. Mike Peterson and Daryl Smith at LB. Rashean Mathis at CB and Donovin Darius at Safety. That Defense was legit.

I like Jack as a DC only, I don't really think he's a HC though.

Defense was legit. Offense had squat, and Rio did a good job of drafting into that defense. But the Jags were not very good when he started, and he did a good job of acquiring defensive talent at the least, something Oakland needs badly.

Shack Harris did the drafting and he wasn't very good. He hit on Lewis, MJD, Smith, Mathis and that's about it. He missed on first round WR, after first round WR.

Stroud and Henderson were already there when Del Rio became HC (those two are the main reasons why that Defense and our teams were good during that small time span). Brackens only played 1 season and was a shell of himself. Hayward came in 05 and Peterson came in Jack's 1st year. Jack and Peterson didn't get along so Del Rio sent him packing after the 08 season. It was a dumb move on Del Rio's part. Darius was already there when Jack took over as well.

The Offense had garbage WRs because of all the failed draft picks/FA signings. They did have one of the best RBs to ever play the game though. Jack has always been a run first guy and Fred Taylor is a pretty good option to have. Add MJD into that mix a little later and that 1-2 punch was one of the best.

I don't take anything away from Jack when it comes to coaching up Defense though. That's one thing he definitely can do. Which is why I think he should stay as a DC, but I'm sure he learned a few things from his first HCing go around.

He's a players coach as well. That's a good thing and a bad thing. Players do like to play for him, but he does play favorites.

Yeah I'm not as worried about getting a coach that can draft offensive players...Carr is our set-piece at QB and he got it done fairly well even with this bunch of WRs. A solid RB would be fantastic, but upgrades at defense are our #1 concern atm, IMO (at least if we plan on winning a bunch of games in the next few years). Picking up a coach like Del Rio would help our defense quite a bit I'd imagine.

But still, Shanahan >>>>>

Al is dead. Shanahan had a lot of success after Elway retired, and then was the only reason the Redskins had 1 good season with RG3. He's a very good coach, especially on the offensive side, and with a young QB with a bright future, that's only a positive. He's got a long history in West Coast offense, but has shown that he has the knowledge and ability to change his playbook in order to fit the team's potential. Good drafter, has a great eye for OL talent. Certainly one of the best available coaches in the NFL, and by FAR the best that the Raiders interviewed.
