Technique Taboo: Jayron Hosley on Andrew Hawkins TDThis blog post will have no play breakdown, but will feature a touchdown costing mistake that is part of basic football fundamentals. This is: Technique Taboo.
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap2000000092767/Andrew-Hawkins-11-yard-touchdown-receptionAndy Dalton and Andrew Hawkins TD on Jayron Hosley to go up 14-0 was great execution by the two of them... but also very bad fundamentals by the rookie CB, Jayron Hosley.
Let's cut the obvious out of the play, it was a great throw and catch. Now what did the rookie CB do wrong?
The Situation: Giants down 7 with the Bengals in the redzone trying to go up 14-0 at home early in the first quarter.
Hawkins runs his 4 yard out into Hosley's flat area and Hosley has his eyes on the QB the whole time which is fine, sound coverage. Now this is where it all goes wrong. Hosley tries to make a play by jumping the route for an INT. Hosley jumps to his left and tries to deflect it with his left arm/hand. This is WRONG. Hosley should have had his left arm behind the WR, around his hip, reaching for the ball (if he thinks he can make the play) with his right hand. This way, the tackle is secured just in case he can't make the deflection. The failure to do so resulted in an easy TD, which could've been presented, perhaps even held the Bengals to a FG. (Although I hate talking what-ifs).
