Kubiak: Matt Schaub’s our starting quarterback

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/10/21/kubiak-matt-schaubs-our-starting-quarterback/

Case Keenum handled his first NFL start fairly well for the Texans on Sunday.

Against a very good Chiefs defense, Keenum completed 15-of-25 passes for 271 yards and a touchdown in a 17-16 loss that dropped the Texans to 2-5 this season. That was good enough for a quarterback rating of 110.6, better than any that Matt Schaub put up in six starts before getting injured in the Week Six loss to the Rams. Coach Gary Kubiak wasn’t moved to make an official change on the depth chart, however.

“Matt’s our starting quarterback,” Kubiak said, via the Houston Chronicle. “Case played this week.”

Kubiak has plenty of time to make a different choice about a starting quarterback before the Texans are next on the field. With a bye in Week Eight, Kubiak has two weeks to see how Schaub is recovering from his leg injury and evaluate whether or not he thinks Keenum gives the team a better chance to win regardless of Schaub’s health.

Although Schaub has looked like shit this season, I still think as of right now he's a better choice than Case. Case looked great in his debut, but he's too green currently. The last thing we need right now is a huge QB controversy.

So with JJ Watt, why does his nose ridge bleed every game?

Is it just that he doesn't have enough time to heal it properly or something?

Pretty much. He probably broke it as a kid playing football, and just repeated trauma to it causes it to bleed due to scar tissue.

Sigh. So we already admitted Sam Montgomery was a wasted third-round pick? The kid didn't even play as a rookie.
I was just talking about him getting on the field earlier this morning. We need to see the young players play.

Texans waived RB Cierre Wood, DE Sam Montgomery, OLB Willie Jefferson. Sources say they violated team rules at KC hotel. Got sent home.

John McClain ‏@McClain_on_NFL 32m
Texans could have used Cierre Wood cause of injuries to Arian Foster and Ben Tate in 17-16 loss to Chiefs.

Sam Montgomery was a huge third-round bust. Jefferson has a lot of potential as a 3-4 pass rusher and played on special teams.

Now watch the Ravens, Patriots or some smart team snatch up Sam Montgomery or Willie Jefferson and they'll become future pro bowlers. The Texans now have four roster spots open, including Brian Cushing's season-ending injury (placed on IR). I guess they will work out players. They have two weeks before their next game.

Do you know why they were waived LOL was hilarious heres what I got from it

Updating a previous item, the Texans waived RB Cierre Wood, DE Sam Montgomery, and OLB Willie Jefferson for smoking marijuana at the team hotel in Kansas City.
If true, these three couldn't possibly be any dumber. The players contend they were simply smoking a cigar. Jefferson's agent, Chad Cannon, is considering filing a grievance on the players' behalf. As Texans OLB Brooks Reed notes, the three rookies "just kind of threw the opportunity of their lives away

The entire team has become a circus. I'm not looking forward to the next game on Sunday Night Football against the Colts. Twelve nights from now.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/10/22/tim-dobbins-released-by-texans/

The Texans released veteran inside linebacker Tim Dobbins earlier this evening. They only have 48 guys on their 53-man roster. And that's assuming Arian Foster is even healthy enough to play on November 3 otherwise it's more like 47 healthy guys.

Seems like an odd move. Dobbins was the little depth we had left at inside linebacker. We need to sign two inside linebackers soon to replace Cushing and Dobbins. If they had to play a game tonight they wouldn't even have enough bodies to suit up. At this pace we're going to release another player or two before the week is over.

2-5 record going into the bye week but at least the cheerleaders are going strong.

Nice to see them using the weight room early in the morning. We get to see next Friday's Freestyle along with three regular-season games by the Houston Rockets before the Texans play again on November 3 against the Colts. I'll take that as a good substitute for a bad football team.

We can save our season if we beat the Colts on Sunday Night Football in 9 days. It's unlikely but that's why they play the games.

We need to draft some inside linebackers like C.J. Mosley in the first round if we pick high enough. If not, I'd still try and trade up for him. We're so thin at ILB it's not even funny anymore. We need some new blood on defense. We need a total overhaul of the roster on defense. We are doing J.J. Watt a disservice by not surrounding him with more talent in that front seven.

Just two years ago we had a stacked front seven with arguably the best starting linebackers in the league in Mario Williams, Brian Cushing, DeMeco Ryans and Connor Barwin. We no longer have any of those four starters to carry our 3-4 defense. We haven't replaced them with equally as good players. The jury is still out on Brooks Reed and Whitney Mercilus. Both are promising young players but neither is a pro bowler yet.

We don't have the personnel to run a proper 3-4 defense. That's the main reason why the Texans defense can't get off the field on third downs and why their defense is one of the worst red-zone defenses in the NFL. The middle of the field is so wide open especially now without Brian Cushing. Opponents can run or pass with big gaping holes out there. Ed Reed just needs to retire after this season. That is looking like a bad signing as well.

In the next draft, I would load up on defensive picks early and often. Maybe draft an offensive tackle and quarterback in the second or third round, but we need to solve this inside linebacker problem before it lingers into the 2014 season. I don't think there is another team out there that has worse inside linebackers than the Texans right now. I'd even take the Jaguars' inside linebackers over ours.

Case Keenum will lead Texans vs. Colts; Matt Schaub’s a backup

http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2013/10/case-keenum-will-start-for-texans-vs-colts/

Quote
Case Keenum, a former undrafted rookie, is the Texans’ starting quarterback. Matt Schaub is Keenum’s backup for the foreseeable future. And when an ex-University of Houston standout takes the field Sunday at Reliant Stadium against the Indianapolis Colts on primetime national television, a struggling team searching for new life will again turn to an unproven pro QB who spent the 2012 season on the Texans’ practice squad.

“I imagine I’ll have a few more goosebumps than I did last week,” said Keenum, who completed 15-of-25 passes for 271 yards, one touchdown and a 110.6 passer rating during a 17-16 road loss to Kansas City. “Obviously, it was a very cool atmosphere last week. But to play in Houston, to play in Reliant, I know this atmosphere; I know what it’s like. And I know Sunday night it’s going to be really special and I’m really excited to play in Houston.”

Schaub is healthy and was a candidate to start, coach Gary Kubiak said. But the veteran QB has been temporarily benched and will watch from the sideline as Keenum runs the Texans’ offense.

“(Schaub) is obviously disappointed,” Kubiak said. “I wouldn’t expect anything else.

“I know it’s very difficult on him. It’s very difficult on me, too.”

I'm excited for Sunday Night's game against the Colts. Primetime on NBC and Case Keenum has a lot of energy. We're seeing the end of the Matt Schaub era. No way the Texans will keep him as an expensive backup next season. He's going to likely be released after June 1. That will save the Texans $10 million in cap space but also I think they're going to release Owen Daniels as well. I thought Keenum played well against the Chiefs despite not having any run game to compliment him. It was a game we may have pulled out if Arian Foster was available.

Case time on Sunday night

Battle Red Day on Sunday Night Football on NBC. I'm not sure if it's just the red jerseys with white pants or if they will break out the red pants also for that ketchup look. It's going to feel like Case Keenum is back at the University of Houston wearing red. It should be an electric atmosphere at Reliant Stadium for an otherwise disappointing 2-5 team. But I was pleased with how hard they played for a full 60 minutes in the last game at Kansas City. We lost 17-16 with Keenum starting and we probably would have lost 38-3 if Matt Schaub had started.

If they win this game they would own the tiebreaker over the Colts and pull to within two games back of first place. Still a lot of football left to be played this season. People act like the season is already over and there are still nine games left to play. I doubt they can win at Indianapolis late in the season (December 15) because they are 0-11 all time playing the Colts on the road but crazier things have happened before.

Just to have any chance to make the playoffs the Texans have to go 6-0 against the division this year. So far they're 1-0 with 5 games left. I know it seems like a long shot with Brian Cushing, Owen Daniels and Danieal Manning likely out for the season, but other teams lose key players due to injuries, and they still find ways to win games.
