HOUSTON – A week ago after practice, Houston Texans rookie DeAndre Hopkins hit the weight room thinking he'd get in a quiet workout only to be challenged to a test of will by J.J. Watt, the league's reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

Hopkins, who leads all rookies with 243 receiving yards on 18 catches with one touchdown entering Sunday's showdown against the Seattle Seahawks, learned first-hand what makes Watt such a relentless playmaker.

Along the way, the kid with the 10-inch sized hands earned Watt's respect with moxie to match his triple-large, oversized receiver gloves.

"It was just me and him in there lifting, and J.J. just told me, 'You're not going to outwork me,''' Hopkins told USA TODAY Sports Friday. "I said, 'I promise you, I'll outwork you.'

"J.J. said, 'I like that.'''

The 27th overall pick in the April draft did his best to hang in there. But pretty soon, his arms were burning, turning to rubber.

"I was trying to keep up with J.J. and I couldn't,'' Hopkins says. "J.J.'s a real quiet guy, hard worker during the week. But I call him the Incredible Hulk. Come game day, he just becomes a monster.

"Yeah, I left the weight room before he left.''

But not before the former cornerback-turned-receiver, who earned the nickname "Superman'' at D.W. Daniel High in Central, S.C., left a strong impression on Watt with a beyond-his-years demeanor.

"DeAndre has got the right mentality – the biggest thing is he wants to be great, wants to put in the work,'' Watt told USA TODAY Sports. "He's showing all the time that he's a big playmaker. He's got all the tools and is doing all those things on the field.

gotta love this team.

Nice. JJ is somehow still underrated, IMO.

He's the best defensive player in the league. I'd say that honor used to belong to Revis but Watt is more dominant now.

It's going to be a telling game. We are 2-1, but we haven't played a full game of football yet and, and anyone that has watched us can tell us that.

I hope we can put together 4 quarters this game against Seattle.

We got this game. I expect the Seahawks to put up a fight for the first half but the Texans will take it home in the second half.

Haha. Exact opposite. =(

Once again, Texans outplay their opponent but somehow find a way to lose.

I jinxed it. 20-3 halftime lead. Matt Schaub's pick six almost made me break my TV screen.
All we had to do was run the ball and we would have won 20-13 in regulation.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/09/30/texans-can-escape-schaubs-contract-after-the-season/

If the Texans were to release Matt Schaub after June 1 in the upcoming off-season, they would only take a $3.5 million cap hit in 2014 but it would be a $7 million cap hit in 2015. However, they would not have to pay him a $10 million base salary in 2014 and they can get out of his contract relatively easy.

That may be something worth looking at if he continues to lose us games. I wouldn't mind trying to sign an experienced starter like Josh Freeman with some of that saved money. He'll become an unrestricted free agent this off-season and Tampa Bay isn't going to re-sign him. I doubt any team is going to trade for Matt Schaub at this point. Maybe before his serious foot injury in 2011 he may have netted us a decent draft pick or two.

After his horrible finish in 2012 and his horrible start to 2013, he's just too slow and aging, not as good as he was in his younger days.
Schaub is 32 and Freeman is 25. We could become a lot younger and still bring in a guy I really like despite his struggles in Tampa Bay.
That would give us another option besides T.J. Yates and Case Keenum. Unless we plan to draft somebody in April.

I guess it's too soon to speculate but this is Schaub's seventh season with the Texans and he's still making rookie mistakes.
If we can somehow win the Super Bowl with Schaub then he'll stay. Obviously, I still want to see him succeed but it's doubtful.
We need a younger quarterback, preferably somebody with experience in his mid 20's, like a Josh Freeman, who Gary Kubiak can coach up.

From Gary Kubiak's Monday press conference

Quote
Kubiak said he’s seen no evidence Schaub has lost confidence and the coach continued to stand behind the 10-year QB.

“I believe in him. He’s a strong kid,” Kubiak said. “He’s been doing this a long time. He’s played good games and been told he’s very, very good. He’s probably been told it wasn’t so good. It’s a tough week we’ve got to work through and be ready to go again.”

As for Schaub’s game-changing pick-six Sunday, Kubiak said the veteran QB didn’t have the option of calling another play once the pass was sent in.

“Once we called it, started the motion, it was game on,” Kubiak said. “So we just had a very, very poor play.”

I find that very disturbing to think Matt Schaub couldn't have called for an audible in that situation. At least call a timeout if you know something looks bad. A Super Bowl caliber quarterback like Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees or Tom Brady would have instantly changed the play based on the look of the defensive formation. Or maybe Gary Kubiak is trying to take all of the blame to protect his player.

But regardless, the fact it was a pass play called in the first place really is frustrating and hard to fathom. And to throw it on the side of the field where the best defensive back in the league plays. People call it Sherman Island for a reason. That pick six was Schaub's fault but the one who put him in that situation is Kubiak. Knowing his quarterback's limitations and the situation of the game he shouldn't have put the team in that predicament.

Under three minutes left in the game. 3rd and 4 at the Seahawks 40 yard line. All we had to do was run the ball one time. Make the Seahawks call a timeout or milk the clock closer to the two-minute warning before punting the ball with Shane Lechler, a future hall of fame punter. We could have pinned them deep in their own territory with a 20-13 lead and allowed our defense to preserve the win with the crowd going wild. We could have also tried a long field goal but I doubt it since Randy Bullock is inconsistent and that would have ranged from 53 to 57 yards. But even that is still better than a pick six interception.

Oh gosh, I don't even want to think about Sunday Night's game at San Francisco. Nationally televised game on NBC.
Everybody in the country will probably have a nice laugh watching the Texans get their asses handed to them on a silver platter.
We really need this win too. At 2-2 we're desperate for a big road win. The only problem is the 49ers are a better team than us.
