There's lots of names being tossed about as possible candidates to succeed Jim Schwartz as the new Lions head coach. Based on the criteria laid out by the Lions on Monday, some are a "fit" and some are not.
Let's start right now by ruling out these two:
Jon Gruden -- he says he's not interested in returning to the NFL (read more here).
David Shaw -- the current Stanford head coach said Tuesday that he has no desire to pursue any open coaching job (read more here).
Who ARE the Lions interested in?
Todd Bowles -- the current Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator. According to the NFL Network, the Lions have requested permission to interview Bowles (see more here).
Now, the Bowles development is noteworthy because the Lions say they are interested in someone has previous head coaching experience.
But Lions GM Martin Mayhew said on Monday that their new head coach, "has to be a leader and lead our team" ... and Bowles just might be that fit.
Two potentials that fit what the Lions say they want:
Ken Whisenhunt -- the former Cardinals head coach has Super Bowl-caliber coaching skills. He's currently the OC with the playoff-bound San Diego Chargers, working with Philip Rivers, who's had a career-turn-around season.
Lovie Smith -- former Chicago Bears head coach also has Super Bowl-caliber coaching skills, but no rings.
Two potentials that COULD be "the guy", but only have college head coaching experience:
Bill O'Brien -- It looks like the current Penn State head coach will return to the NFL; the only question is when and where. O'Brien is reportedly in ongoing talks with the Houston Texans. One thing to keep in mind -- O'Brien is one of Belichick's former guys, and they don't have a history of having their own success.
Brian Kelly -- the former GVSU head coach and current Notre Dame leader has reportedly in the past mentioned having NFL aspirations. Could he do a Chip Kelly and sprint off to the pros?
Other names being mentioned?
Adam Gase -- the current Denver Broncos offensive coordinator may or may not be interested, but it will be hard to tell since he's postponed any sort of job search while the Broncos are in the playoffs (read more here). Like Bowles, Gase could be that strong leader the Lions want. Rumors are that he's not interested in the Browns head coaching job ... but Gase IS a Detroit native, so there is that.
Mike Zimmer -- the current Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator says he's focusing on the playoffs and adds it would be unfair to his team to be looking right now (read more here).
Jay Gruden -- the current Bengals OC might be interested, but we likely won't know until after they're out of the playoffs. His brother, Jon, gave no clues as to his brothers desires when the press spoke with him on Monday.
