Bernard, Brown and Phillips are OUT

Wheels up for Hakeem Nicks. He's traveling to SF with the team. Gotta figure he plays tomorrow, but is still questionable.

Giants wideout Hakeem Nicks maintained that he felt no pain in his left knee or right foot during practice on Friday and stayed optimistic about his chances of returning to game action Sunday after sitting the last three weeks.

Great to have Nicks back for this game...

Is it also HUGE to have Hosley back and also Rivers to cover Vernon Davis.

Michael Strahan visits Giants defensive line meeting room before 49ers game

Quote
Before this week's NFC Championship Game rematch between the Giants and the 49ers, a familiar face reappeared in the Giants' defensive line meeting room: Michael Strahan.

The long-time Giants defensive end sat with his former teammates -- and the new faces -- for a full position meeting earlier this week, lasting about an hour, players said. Defensive end Adrian Tracy wrote on his Twitter account Wednesday, "@michaelstrahan came thru and dropped some KNOWLEDGE."

"Long enough to be effective," linebacker/defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka said when asked about Strahan's visit.

Kiwanuka was mum on details, wanting to respect the privacy of what takes place in their meeting rooms. So were defensive ends Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul.

But the magnitude of Sunday's game and the defensive line's early frustrations getting to the quarterback this season -- the Giants have just eight sacks in five games so far -- seemed to be factors. Each of the players called Strahan's visit "motivating."

"That’s what he pretty much came to talk about, how big of a game it is," defensive tackle Linval Joseph said. "And just getting your job done. Everybody do their job, and you can get a win. A physical team is a good challenge, and right now is the best time to play them."

Strahan watched film with the group, sharing his observations and "different technique stuff" mostly for the defensive ends, rookie defensive tackle Markus Kuhn said. He also answered questions.

"Just having somebody in there, giving a different perspective on the things we do," Kuhn said. "He sees thing when he watches the games, just on TV, differently than other guys, even coaches, because he's been in the game so much and he has so much experience. He just comes and gives hints or things from his perspective."

Strahan still holds the NFL's single-season sack record of 22.5, set in 2001. Both Tuck and Kuhn noted the game is different now for defensive linemen than when Strahan played, so it sounded like that was another topic of conversation.

"The game’s completely changed from when he was playing," Tuck said. "He didn't have to play with the stuff that we’ve got to play through, option quarterbacks and just a lot of (junk)."

From the players' accounts, Strahan didn't deliver a speech to hype up the defensive linemen for this week's game. He's also in the New York area more now that he's co-hosting "Live! with Kelly and Michael," and has never been a stranger at Giants headquarters since retiring after the 2007 Super Bowl season.

But his visit nonetheless resonated with the group.

"He talked to everybody, just making everybody feels good and just saying, 'It's just the beginning of the season,' " Joseph said. "Just a little talk."

Kiwanuka added: "Living legends that we are close enough in history to know and have played with make a difference."

Apparently, #10 is still their main focus. Former Giants wideout Mario Manningham has characteristically (attempted to) call out his former rock-thrower and company, showing that he has been “educating” his current teammates on the tendencies of his former ones:

Quote
”I’ve talked to my teammates and given them some heads up on what’s going to happen," said Manningham. “I know what’s going on and I shared it with them."

While others out west choose to pay compliments to him.

Quote
“He's a magician. That's what he is," 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said. "And he's a football player."

And then some defensive players chimed in:

Quote
"Definitely, just watch the film," S Dashon Goldson said. "He's moving back there — he's not staying in one spot. He can pull a rabbit out of a hat at any time."

Including Patrick Willis…

Quote
“[Manning] made it look almost easy," San Fran LB Patrick Willis said referring to Ole Miss days. "I didn't see adverse times that much. Also, back then I didn't know what to look for, I was just happy to be winning."
