Those are just the base line cap numbers and are a bit misleading. The signing bonus and guarantees will be spread throughout the contract and make the actual payouts higher. You guys are paying him an AAV of $51m.
The 2023 number is still his rookie contract. The new contract numbers (the extension) don't start until 2024 and even then the above doesn't list his 2027/2028 numbers. You guys back logged his contract and added a void year, or two. Basically added a fake year, or two to spread out the cap number. It looks good on paper and is good in the short run (because it frees up more cap right now), but he really isn't taking a team friendly deal.
No, not quite. The cap charges for the next 4 seasons are all small, giving the team major flexibility to build around him and continue winning.
His 2027 and 2028 cap hit are heavy, which is when he'll get a restructure/extension and that cap hit will get converted to a signing bonus and spread out over the next 4 years after that.
Howie Rosemans secret sauce that makes this contract cap manageable is the assumption that it will not be the last contract the team gives that player. If the Eagles had an ounce of hesitation about Hurts, this would have been a 3 year deal. But when you sign a QB to a 5 year deal at that APY, you're really actually signing them to an 8 year deal and saying "we'll figure out the last half later".
It's the best case scenario for a team that is in "win now" mode but is young enough and in position to remain that way for a while.
