forward progress is determined by the runner's body. spot is determined by the ball. the runner did not voluntarily move himself backwards, so the spot is the furthest point the ball reached.

I clearly remember Brees once doing a leap'n'reach on 4th and inches and not getting it because he pulled the ball back himself (and the play hadn't ended as it would in the endzone) - did they update this recently?
