I understand why Geno would get starter reps but not sure why Sanchez would?

I don't think they're treating their preseason as teams normally do (at least in the quarterback position). Because of the battle for qb, my guess is that whoever does well in preseason wins the job come week 1 which means both Sanchez and Geno need to get first team reps. I read somewhere that its likely that Smith will start vs the Jags so both qbs get an honest shot. Should be interesting to see how long they keep Mark in on Friday tho.

Quinton Coples 'out indefinitely' after upcoming ankle surgery

Quinton Coples was making the move from defensive end to linebacker for the Jets this year and appeared to be a potential breakout candidate if he could figure out the position under Rex Ryan. That might not be happening now: Coples is "out indefinitely" with an ankle injury.

The Jets announced the news on Sunday evening and also said that Coples had a procedure on his ankle scheduled for Tuesday.

"He will miss the rest of the preseason and is out indefinitely," the team said in a statement.

It was previously reported that Coples would miss several weeks as a result of a hairline fracture in his ankle, which he apparently suffered Saturday in the preseason game against the Jaguars.

Has that injury escalated or is this simply the Jets making things official and being vague? It's hard to tell.

"Indefinitely" is one of the scariest words in sports when you're talking injuries. It could mean, well, anything. Coples could be back by the time the preseason is over, or he could end up missing the entire season. There's just no timetable. And that's a nightmare.

Particularly so for the Jets, who now face a dearth of real talent at linebacker. Sheldon Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson and Kenrick Ellis have the defensive line stacked but they need a pass rusher to help out.

Expect Antwan Barnes to fill Coples role while the former UNC product is out, which means a major step down for the Jets.
