From what I've been hearing, it played out like this:
- Regents reviewed results of investigation and recommended everyone keeps their job. Supposedly, they told Wally if he fired Durkin, they would fire him. Everyone kept their jobs.
- The announcements were made and people, notably the players, the SGA, and Gov. Hogan, spoke out against his reinstatement. Regents have the power to fire Wally but not Durkin. Hogan, or whoever is Gov. at the time, appoints the regents.
- Wally was like fuck it and fired Durkin, presumably under the assumption that any retaliatory fears assuaged due to everything now being out in the public eye. I think it was ultimately the right call, but the flip flopping just makes it look like a huge cluster fuck.
Now Wally is retiring at the end of the academic year, and Matt Canada will continue coaching while they search for a replacement.
